Hamas seeks to distance itself from latest bin Laden comments
By The Associated Press
Hamas sought to distance itself from remarks by Osama bin Laden on Sunday, shortly after a newly-released recording by the Al-Qaida leader said that the Western freeze on funds to the Hamas-led Palestinian government was evidence that Washington and Europe were conducting "a Zionist crusaders war on Islam."
"The blockade which the West is imposing on the government of Hamas proves that there is a Zionist crusaders war on Islam," bin Laden said in his first new message in three months.
In response, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said that, "the ideology of Hamas is totally different from the ideology of Sheikh bin Laden." But he also added that the "international siege on the Palestinian people" would create tension in the Arab and Islamic world.
"It's natural that this tension is going to create an impression that there is a Western-Israeli alliance working against the Palestinians," Abu Zuhri said, adding that Hamas is interested in having good relations with the West.
