Israeli settlers convicted in bomb plot
A Jerusalem court on Wednesday convicted three Israeli settlers for attempting to blow up an Arab girls' school in Jerusalem last year to avenge Palestinian attacks against Jews.

Shlomo Dvir, Yarden Morag and Ofer Gamliel, all from the West Bank settlement of Bat Ayin, were convicted of attempted murder and possession of illegal weapons in connection with the failed attack in the Jerusalem Arab neighbourhood of A-Tur in April 2002. Sentences will be passed at a later date.

The convictions come against the background of mounting concern over the emergence of a new Jewish “underground,” reminiscent of settler vigilantes who attacked Palestinians in the mid-1980s.

The court found that Mr. Dvir and Mr. Morag parked an explosives-laden trailer outside the main entrance to the school before dawn and set a timer for 7:25 a.m., just as students would be arriving. The attack was aborted when a passing police cruiser became suspicious of the men and found the trailer contained two bricks of explosives, cooking gas canisters, a clock, battery, detonator and fuse.

5. I made a bet down here last time

about another group of Jewish extremists and while everyone doted on the Holy State's great "anti-terrorism" bullshit and how Israel was great vs. the nasty Arafat government that would never display this level of civilization.

I bet that they would be walking around Hebron in six months and it wound up being one.

This one is a bit more serious so I'm guessing it will take a year for the Israeli President to grant them clemency.

6. PA actually trust Israeli Courts! - but feel too few settlers are caught.
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 08:42 PM by papau
"trust" is a tough word to use - but I think correct. The roundup "Patriot Act" type arrests of PA folk without trial suck - but there is more to the Israeli Justice system than that evil - and elsewhere folks tell me that they are treated fairly.

The Israeli Court system has put away the settlers responsible for 6 killings of PA folk - and are investigating and likely to put away those responsible for 20 more.

but the Palestinians feel that there are more - and that Israel is not putting enough effort into this part of "Justice". And I understand many Israeli's agree. But it is hard to get a priority for this with more money allocated, given the terror situation.

So Jewish settlers are caught and jailed - and bombings stopped - but not often enough. So if you are a Palestinian you see folks that should be investigated on the back burner - so you don't push to get PA terrorists into the PA jails.

Yet one more roadblock to peace - that needs leadership to focus folks on the prize of peace - and not on checking every move to see if the otherside is ahead in the score of evil done today.

8. Well...
NOT LETTING THEM FREE ONCE YOU CATCH THEM would be good advice for both sides.

10. That sends a great message.
It sends the message that Israel will supposedly prosecute terrorists, unlike the Palestinian Authority. It helps Israelis think that their government is morally superior to the Palestinian Authority.

However, I think that there is some seriously flawed thinking here.

The seriously flawed thinking is the idea that planned attacks by people from the civilian crowd to others in a civilian crowd are the only types of attacks that should be considered worthy enough to prosecute.

In the case of suicide bombings, you mostly have people who are part of the Palestinian civilian crowd deciding to kill Israeli civilian crowds. The same goes with those people who tried to bomb that school. That's why it's considered to be terrorism.

I also have to add that it's falsely being considered terrorism when Palestinians from the civilian crowd kill people from the Israeli Defense Forces. Now, if the Palestinians had their own army, then it probably wouldn't be called terrorism for one army to attack another army. A Palestinian army could also kill Israelis in a civilian population and could argue that their killing was justified because they were specifically aiming for targets that happened to be in that area. However, the only nation that has an army is Israel. Whenever they kill Palestinians through their occupation, they make the excuse that these killings are necessary because they're supposedly targeting specific people. Therefore, it's not considered terrorism in the eyes of Israelis and of others who don't live in the West Bank and the Gaza strip. In the Palestinian's eyes however, this is terrorism. In the Palestinian's eyes, the IDF are killing men, women, and children in their civilian population. They obviously meant to do it because they used a bomb to kill one Hamas member, and ended up killing many (which, I would like to add that the Hamas member himself is not getting a trial before this killing).

IDF almost always gets away with their supposedly justified killings of Palestinian civilians. So, in the eyes of many Palestinians, they are getting away with terrorism. While Israelis are thinking that their nation is great for putting one type of terrorist in prison, the Palestinians still are not impressed because their terrorists are still after them.
