General Assembly demands Israel not deport Arafat after US Council veto
U.N. News Center

19 September – The United Nations General Assembly today demanded that Israel not deport or threaten the safety of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, approving overwhelmingly a resolution by Arab and Non-Aligned countries circumventing a United States veto of a similar resolution in the Security Council earlier this week.

The resolution, approved by 133 votes with four against and 15 abstentions in a special emergency session of the Assembly, also demanded "the complete cessation of all acts of violence, including all acts of terrorism, provocation, incitement and destruction," and expressed full support for the Road Map peace plan.

The four negative votes were Israel, Marshall Islands, Micronesia and the United States.

1. Excellent!
Not that it matters, though... Israel has broken Security Council resolutions, which are supposed to be lawfully binding.

6. Hmmm, why would tiny little Pacific nations be voting that way?
The Marshall Islands used to be a US possession, gets aid from the US and the govt is still tied to the US in some sort of 'free association'. And Micronesia is a US Trust with no political parties. Both of them with their staggering combined population of around 150,000 seem to have an over-dependence on US aid. I guess voting no on resolutions like this one is their only chance at getting some attention from the world even if it is only for a split second and accompanied by well-deserved ridicule...

7. This is funny...
all three countries that voted against the resolution aside from the US get heavy US aid.

Two of them are outposts of imperialism, and the third...

9. I found it...
"Countries abstaining were Australia, Cameroon, Canada, Colombia, Fiji, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Nauru, Nicaragua, Papua-New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Tonga and Tuvalu."

Also in that article it says the EU put in an amendment to specifically condemn suicide bombings, so there goes the feeble excuse the US had, as they still voted against the resolution...

12. Yeah, it was...
It's always fun to see their feeble excuses get blown out of the water like that, though :)
