Youth believe Arabs dirty, uneducated
Recent poll reveals 75 percent of Jewish students believe Arabs uneducated, uncivilized, unclean. Similar stereotypes found amongst Arab students toward Jews, but in lower percentages

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3350467,00.html

<snip>

"A Haifa University survey investigating Arabs and Jews' views on one another reveals disturbing results.

The poll showed that 75 percent of Jewish students believe that Arabs are uneducated people, are uncivilized and are unclean.

On the other hand 25 percent of the Arab youth believe that Jews are the uneducated ones, while 57 percent of the Arab's believe Jews are unclean.

Over a third of the Jewish students taking part in the survey confirmed that they are afraid of Arabs.

The poll was conducted by Dr. Haggai Kupermintz, Dr. Yigal Rosen and Harbi Hasaisi of Haifa University's Center for Research on Peace Education."

2. well, in a way it could - we need to be honest about our problems before
we can fix them.

I find it interesting (in a sad and f'd up way) how all three groups have some level of distrust, dehumanization, and hatred toward the other two, and they are all from the same root religion. If only we humans could see each other as fellow humans, and not be blind to our differences but to celebrate both differences and similarities as elements which lend strength to our species, like an alloy that is stronger than the sum of its parts.

Oops. there I go being crazy again. Sorry.

Go team!

3. This survey was done in 2004 and they said if it was done...
today it would even be more extreme. Things are getting worse as time goes on, will it ever turn around.

5. Must be the curriculum taught in Israeli schools, and listening to
Israeli politicians that makes the difference. Israel is not teaching for peace.

8. Neither are the Palestinians...
The irony is that the Palestinians actually are less "educated" in general, and sanitation systems without a doubt are worse, if not non-existent.

The burden is clearly on both sides to make peace. I haven't read Carter's new book, but I doubt he'd deny that.

9. Quite the observation...
I am reminded of the tale where some antagonists cut off the arms and legs of a man, throw him into the water, and criticize his swimming skills.

16. And the Palestinians are?
I can easily provide links and footage of the "peace" that is taught in Palestinian schools. You know the peace where Jews are exterminated.

Yet once again, it is all Israel's fault eh?

17. Agreed...
...both sides in this are equally reprehensible in what they teach future generations.

The fault, clearly, lies with the respective societies.

6. ever notice the universal ethic insult is "dirty"?
Ironic to me is that the Israelis call the Arabs dirty, even though Arabs were notorious during medieval days for comparing their own, daily bathing habits to those of Europeans. Vikings were singled out for bathing only once a week, and blowing their snot into their communal face washbowls. And the English of the time considered Vikings bizarre for cleaning the "holy dirt" off themselves more than once a year. Hell, the French of today are notorious for refusing to bathe!

7. On tape: Palestinians harassed in Hebron ‘cage’
VIDEO) Tape obtained by B’Tselem shows heated argument between Palestinian family in Hebron and woman Jewish settler; quarrel just one example of suffering we endure on daily basis, head of Palestinian family tells Ynet. Settlers’ spokesman: Claims exaggerated

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3350480,00.html

<snip>

"The Abu- Aisha family in Hebron has been suffering at the hands of their neighbors from the nearby Jewish settler community of Tel-Rumeda for a along time now. A video filmed by 16-year-old Raja Abu Aisha and obtained by B’Tselem depicts a confrontation with a woman resident of the “Ramat Yishai” neighborhood in Tel-Rumeda.

Members of the Abu Aisha family claimed that the quarrel was just one example of the suffering they endure on a daily basis.

Taiseer Abu- Aisha, 43, told Ynet that he had filed between 200 and 300 complaints in recent years, but police did nothing to stop the harassing.

Abu-Aisha and his extended family live in a two-storey house. “The cage you see in the video is where we live. Not once do we open the door and not hear curse words or get stones and eggs thrown at us,” he said. “The latest fashion during this cold winter – the settlers spray us with cold water using a big fire hose located near the house.”

Abu- Aisha said “hell” is not a strong enough word to describe what his family is going through."

10. Very disturbing.
I think the best thing the Palestinians can do for themselves PR wise is to get as many of these type of videos out there for the world to see. Once people see the true face of the settlers and how complicit the IDF is in allowing this to happen, support for them will wane. And to think they claim to be the most religious of the bunch makes me laugh.

In fact, it is probably the Israeli newspaper with the highest circulation.

12. I was thinking broader than that.
Right now, Israel isn't facing any pressure to withdraw from the occupied territories because the US is backing them. If people in the US really knew enough about this kind of thing, I would hope that support would eventually be withdrawn. I don't think the average American is aware of this kind of thing and I don't think they would support it if they knew.

13. Peretz: Probe harassment of Palestinians
Defense minister says video showing haredi woman taunting Hebron family ‘shamed Israel’; orders IDF to investigate incident

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3350865,00.html

<snip>

"Defense Minister Amir Peretz has ordered Wednesday an immediate and thorough investigation following Ynet’s report on the harassment of a Palestinian family in Hebron at the hands of Jewish settlers.

Peretz, who saw the footage and heard first-hand accounts from members of the Abu Aisha family, spoke with IDF Southern Command Chief Yair Naveh and instructed him to launch an investigation into the incident “that shamed Israel,” according to him.

Taiseer Abu- Aisha, 43, told Ynet following the release of the video that he had filed between 200 and 300 complaints in recent years, but police did nothing to stop the harassing."

14. Typical...
When you want to put "window dressing" on an issue, but do nothing to actually change things, perform a probe/study/investigation.

15. Settler violence in Hebron continues
Abu-Aisha family presents additional footage of settlers assaulting family in Tel Rumeida neighborhood. Video shows boy unable to reach family home because of settlers

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3350914,00.html

<sni>

"A mere day after the video showing a Jewish resident of Hebron harassing an Arab family, human rights group B'Tselem reveals another video, also shot by the family.

The video shows the family confronting settler children in Tel Rumeida as one of the family's sons, Shrif, tries to get into the house. The boy is seen standing at the entrance gate to the neighborhood, unable to advance towards his house due to a group of settlers."

<snip>

"Defense Minister Amir Peretz ordered an immediate investigation into the harassment after its publication on Ynet. Peretz, who saw the footage and heard the testimonies of family members, spoke with Head of the Central Command, Maj. Gen. Yair Neveh, and ordered him to conduct an thorough probe into the incident, which Peretz said "shames Israel."

The Jewish community in Hebron announced Wednesday that it welcomes Peretz's decision to order the probe.

"We have no doubt that the probe will uncover the extent of the harassment of the Arab citizens against the Jewish residents of the neighborhood and not the tendentious picture presented by the media," the community said."

18. I am sure it is true.
But I also think that Hebron settlers are not representative of most Israelis. They are pretty much the furthest of the far right wing of the entire population. I wouldn't look to the Kipot Shrugot to get a clear picture of the average Israeli's feelings on the territories or Arabs in general. That's like going to a Klan rally to see what Americans think of minorities. Remember, there are only a few hundred Hebron settlers, and they are probably all crazy.
