WALTHAM, Mass. - Venturing into the lion‘s den, Jimmy Carter headed Tuesday to Brandeis University, a historicallly Jewish college, to confront the furor over his new book on the Middle East, which has been attacked as slanted against Israel .

A tightly controlled discussion was planned, with 15 questions selected in advance. Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz had also hoped to debate Carter but was told he would not be allowed inside.

Carter "thinks it is important to present his ideas directly to audiences that can be influential today and in the future in finding permanent solutions to bring peace and security to Israel — and peace and justice to the Palestinians," Carter spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said.

Carter‘s book has been criticized by some Jewish leaders as riddled with inaccuracies and distortions. Some have complained that it appears to equate South Africa‘s former apartheid system of racial segregation with Israeli treatment of the Palestinians.

but not one has caused the atrocities being committed on the Palestinian people. The lies and spin re those atrocities are slowly being exposed. Go Jimmy Carter. We love you.

The misinformation disseminated in Carter's book is of the same genre of propaganda used by enemies of Israel for decades.

The fact that you seem to believe Carter despite the numerous critical errors pointed out in the book
by several sources is very proof of the danger of allowing anyone to be held in such high esteem, even Jimmy Carter.

As for atrocities:

Who is launching Kassam rockets into Israel on a regular basis?
Who continually calls for the annihilation of Israel in their charters and in the Arab press?
Who regularly uses antisemitic incitement in their media to sway hearts and minds against Jews?
Who is willing to let their children become suicide bombers, hoping to kill as many innocent people as possible?

Carter is no longer a man of peace.
He has thrown in his hat with Hamas, a terrorist organization that vows to destroy Israel.

Just look at this comment from his book:

"It is imperative that the general Arab community and all significant Palestinian groups make it clear that they will end the suicide bombings and other acts of terrorism when international laws and the ultimate goals of the Roadmap for Peace are accepted by Israel."

It is hard to interpret this statement in any other way than that Carter says it is acceptable for Palestinians to continue their murderous terror attacks until Israel complies with the "ultimate goals of the Roadmap".

though perhaps what he is saying is that until israel starts obeying intl law he understands why palestinian resistance doesnt.

the door swing both ways. if the palestinians stop their terrorism than israel should obey intl law and the road maps ect... but its clear both parties havent yet fulfilled this 100%... though one side insists on accelerating the opposite direction of the road map, continues its violations of intl law and daily assaults and incursions on a civilian population.

the other side, arguably, has stopped its suicide missions on israel.

Hundreds pack Shapiro for Carter tickets

"A line of over 1,000 restless students snaked throughout the Shapiro Campus Center Atrium Wednesday night in hopes of receiving a ticket to hear former President Jimmy Carter speak today about his controversial book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. With schoolwork, laptops and snacks in hand, students waited for hours in a line that extended far beyond the building into the freezing night.

The earliest students began lining up around 4 p.m., though Student Life officials didn't begin handing out the free tickets until 7 p.m.

Of the 1,550 tickets available to the Brandeis community, 950 were distributed that night to undergraduates, Stephanie Grimes, director of Student Activities, said. Three hundred were given to graduate students Thursday afternoon, and a lottery was held for 150 staff members and 100 faculty members this week, Senior Vice President for Communications Lorna Miles said.

The Gosman Sports and Convocation Center will be filled to capacity this afternoon not only by people from Brandeis, but also by a sizeable team of security officials and members of the media, Miles said."

All questions are being prescreened. No live interaction with students/staff/faculty, let alone someone as capable as Dershowitz.

The book, agree with it or not, is causing a lot of people who had generally respected Carter, esp for his work after he left office to reconsider it.

Carter opens Brandeis speech with a joke, defends book

Jimmy Carter, stepping to the podium to applause and a standing
ovation, quipped to Brandeis University students and staff today
that the school's invitation to speak there was the most exciting
one he had received in nearly 30 years. It came in second only
to the US Congress's invitation to deliver his presidential
inaugural address, he said to laughter.

Then Carter, responding to criticism about his controversial book,
"Palestine Peace not Apartheid," outlined the work he had done as
president to bring peace to Israel and defended the use of the word,
"apartheid" in the title.

"With my use of apartheid, I realize this has caused great concern in the
Jewish community," Carter said. "The title makes it clear."

The book is about events in the Palestinian territory, not Israel, he said,
gesturing with his hand to emphasize his point. As the audience was silent,
he spoke of roads Palestinians could not use and of the more than 500
checkpoints in the tiny West Bank they had to go through on a regular basis.

He suggested that a group of Brandeis professors and students visit the
occupied territory to see for themselves "the plight of the Palestinians."
