Study: Attacks on Jews in Europe rose in 2006
Last year saw a substantial rise in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in Germany, Austria and the Scandinavian countries, according to the Global Forum Against Anti-Semitism.

In an annual press conference, the forum explained that 2006 was characterized by escalation in the number and violent nature of attacks on Jews, proliferation of Holocaust denial and increased comparison of Israel to the Nazi regime.

The Global Forum - a joint effort of the Jewish Agency, the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office - counted 360 anti-Semitic incidents in France in 2006, compared to 300 in 2005. In the United Kingdom, the report listed a yearly decrease from 321 incidents in 2005 to 312 incidents in 2006. Russia recorded 300 incidents in 2006 compared to 250 the preceding year, and Austria saw a jump from 50 incidents to 83 last year. The Scandinavian countries saw 53 incidents in 2006, substantially more than the previous year's 35. The report cited a 60-percent rise in incidents in the Berlin area, although it did not include figures for all of Germany.

Spokesmen for the forum emphasized on Sunday the many difficulties in classifying and reporting anti-Semitic incidents that affect the accuracy of the figures, which are primarily valuable as indicators of trends in the countries examined.

1. Well, here's another topic I could comment on. . .
32 years of study on National Socialism, with two books written on its relevance to today, and countless university lectures on a variety of related topics, but I've certainly learned my lesson.

Here's a white bread, non-confrontational topic:
It's a little cool in South California tonight, good chance of rain. Better keep my puppy indoors.

Thanks for the link, Behind the Aegis. I enjoy reading your posts.

12. That is not a link.
I have seen reports here in the States and the UK from 2005 (2006 stats are just starting to emerge). The stats show (from 2005) no increase or a slight one, still no where at the level of anti-Semitism in any of those countries. As for Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and the OT, those aren't examples of Islamaphobia.

4. Important subject. It seems it is becoming more severe
and that there are very dangerous trends:
"Various reports were published in European nations during the year revealing the scope and severity of anti-Semitism. A British parliamentary commission determined that Islamists and the radical left were responsible for increased anti-Semitism in the country. Research published in Germany indicated widespread use of anti-Semitic expressions in schools, primarily by Muslim students. Research in the Ukraine found that about a third of the country's citizens had negative opinions of Jews."

Thank you for posting.

5. its also important to call a spade a spade
if antisemitism is rising among muslins than say muslims... dont label an entire country or "around the world" antisemetic because the muslims in that country/ies are. get the point?

7. What are you talking about?
The article was very clear who they were talking about and who they weren't. Do you have a problem with the fact that anti-Semitism is rising or that it is being pointed out as a rising problem?

17. You seem to be suggesting that it is understandable
for Muslims to commit hate crimes against Jews and those expressing alarm are just "constantly bitch and complain about every little thing." I would say that such alarm and worry is well founded, especially as it culminated in industrialized genocide. Your brush off is rather disconcerting to say the least.

18. as long as it doesnt happen under my roof
take a look at the middle east. real piece of shit right now huh?
theres 2 groups of people who are bring pointed at... americans and israelis.
now i know you think israelis, in the form of jews, are the only ones being picked on, but in all honestly theres a whole group of americans who are afraid to travel overseas because they think theyll be attacked. i have heard from a large number of middle class middle america americans that if you do travel overseas to pretend youre canadian and sew a candian flag on your bag and never show anyone your passport. this is for travel to europe! stupidest thing ever right?
i agree. of course there is always the chance someone who hates americans, who has some grudge, will be hiding in the shadows waiting for you. same for israelis... but these people will always be out there. always.
there will never be a time where everyone gets along. yes the middle east is very unpopular right now and jews and muslims are having a tough time... but for every muslim complaint about this ive heard about 5000 jewish ones and im rather getting tired of the bitching and complaining. do something constructive, tell me something new or shut up already is how i feel.
this doesnt mean i hate jews or think the attacks on them are justified.

does this help?

19. Fair enough,
I see what you are saying. I sort of still disagree but I understand better I think. I actually returned stateside from Europe after spending quite a long time there (I did not pretend I was Canadian, I just told people I was American and we are not all the same)and even normally decent and nice Europeans expressed shocking sentiments towards both Jews and Muslims. Maybe that is why I find it particularly worrisome: people who were great in all other ways, harbored very ugly opinions.

11. So wait...
Because Israel is doing whatever it is doing, I should just expect to be attacked by an Arab wherever I may be, apparently because Arabs in Europe and elsewhere can't tell the difference between an Israeli and a Jew. Congratulations on insulting both sides of the conflict at once.

13. That is not an excuse!
The situation in Israel DOES NOT justify OR excuse anti-Semitism! And if that is the case, why are you "bitching and complaining" about increases in Islamaphobia given the events of 9-11, London, Spain, and places around the world? Shouldn't those Arabs and Muslims "get a fucking clue and not acted so shocked?" :eyes:

16. i agree its not an excuse and i dont support these actions
btw, i dont think the arabs and muslims are shocked by the islamophobia. i think theyre more shocked when they find someone who isnt hostile toward muslim actions around the world. you dont see muslims in here every day complaining about being racially profiled do you???

20. in here? where here?
Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 07:58 AM by Shaktimaan
In America? In New York? I sure do see muslims complaining about being racially profiled, and rightfully so. Go to CAIR and see if you think they might be whining too much also.

As for being afraid to travel abroad, I can understand that sentiment, but I wouldn't really worry about it. I travel all the time and have rarely encountered any issues. Last year I was in Bangladesh, Nepal and India on a short 5 week trip and the only comment I had directed at me in that vein was from an Irish guy, a kid really, who asked whether I found it difficult travelling now that everyone hates Americans so much. I laughed.

I've never heard of any American pretending to be Canadian, least of all in Europe. What, are the Dutch travelling around in gangs looking for Americans to jump? Have those vicious Swedes been putting the boot to backpackers on vaca? Not likely.

edit: I just re-read your post and realized that you are equating rising anti-semitism with hostility towards American backpackers in Europe. They are really, REALLY not in the same category.
