Syria deploying rockets on border, say Israeli sources
A direct consequence of the 2nd Lebanon War. Like the increased use of IEDs is a consequence of the Iraq mess. Syria will now have an effective deterrent.

JERUSALEM: Syria has positioned on its border with Israel thousands of medium- and long-range rockets capable of striking major towns across northern Israel, military and government sources said. This deployment, coupled with other recent reports of Syrian troop mobilization, is seen in Israel as an indication that Damascus may be preparing for future "low intensity warfare," they said.

---

The Syrian Army accelerated its deployment of medium- and long-range rockets in the wake of Israel's war with Lebanon in summer 2006.

"We have noticed that in recent months Syria has deployed hundreds, possibly thousands, of medium- and long-range rockets along the border ," a military source said.

"Many of the rockets are hidden in underground chambers and in camouflaged silos, which make them very difficult to locate," the source said.

:sarcasm:

There will not be an end to the unrest in the ME in my lifetime...and I figure I have at least 30-40 years left.

Am so tired of war....

4. Iran? No, no, no, that's thinking inside the box.
If you want to unleash the true PNAC "transformational" power, ya gotta think BIG. See, Iran and Syria are semi-allies over Israel, so hitting Iran to hit Syria is just so predictable and 20th century. Practically Clintonesque. You want to shock and awe the world, then you hit ISRAEL. With NUKES. That'll make people sit up and realize America is large, in charge, and more than a little bit insane. We'll have the Chinese GIVING us back our bonds.

6. The difference between medium/long range rockets and the Katyushas
is that the larger rockets require more set-up time and larger, more visible launchers in order to be deployed. During the war last summer, the little Katyushas could pop up anywhere, fire and be gone in a couple of minutes. However, all of Hezbollah's medium-rage rockets (the ones which could hit Tel-Aviv with 100kg warheads) were easily neutralized by Israel on the first day of hostilities. I believe that they got one of later in the war but that it broke up just after leaving the launch pad.

If Syria is visibly deploying medium or long range rockets, I suspect they won't be as difficult to destroy as the Katyushas.
