Envoy to El Salvador recalled, reportedly found naked, drunk

A rich feast of news today, you can't just make this stuff up.

The Foreign Ministry recalled Israel's ambassador to El Salvador, Tzuriel Refael, after he was found in the back yard of his residence naked, drunk, bound and gagged, it emerged on Monday.

According to reports, San Salvador policemen, which guard the ambassador's residence as a matter of course, found Refael inebriated, with his hands tied, his mouth gagged with a rubber ball and carrying accessories that implied he had been involved in sexual activity.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said it views the incident very seriously, and that the ambassador had been recalled after he was given the opportunity to explain himself.

"This conduct does not match the behavior expected from Israeli diplomats," the statement said.

I recall the French scandal, and read the "slant-eyed" slam comment by the Israeli ambassador to Australia, but was interested to see references to these other instances. Bush may appoint a lot of arrogant, insensitive, very wealthy cronies/contributors to Ambassadorships around the globe, but evidently their State Department briefings and handlers have scared them into keeping their racist bigotries and sexual aberrations out of public view.

The AP story had it as he was "wearing" them. Enquiring minds want to know.

I hope the Salvadoran hooker who was presumably servicing him knows the moneymaking opportunity she has in her hands (no pun intended) if she gets in touch with the right kind of media outlet.

Unless this was all a discreditation op and some planners somewhere are sniggering.
