Ministerial committee declares Lebanon conflict a war
Ministerial Committee for Symbols and Ceremonies decides that last summer's conflict between Israel and Hizbullah will be defined as a war, following pressure from bereaved families. Committee to decide on name for war by Remembrance Day

<snip>

"The Ministerial Committee for Symbols and Ceremonies decided on Monday that last summer's conflict between Israel and Hizbullah in Lebanon will be defined as a war.

The committee has not chosen a name for the war, and announced that suggestions for names should be transferred to the committee by Remembrance Day, at which time it will make its decision.

It currently appears that the three final options which will be presented to the committee are: War of the North, Shield of the North War, and The Second Lebanon War.

Minister Jacob Edery, who chairs the committee, explained that in light of pressure exerted by the bereaved families, it has been decided to convene the committee and declare the summer campaign a war.

Once a name has been decided, it will still need the government's approval."

1. Panel officially names summer conflict 'Second War in Lebanon'
<snip>

"Last summer's conflict in Lebanon will officially be called The Second War in Lebanon, according to a decision reached Wednesday by the committees appointed to choose a name for the fighting.

The name was chosen by Ministers Ya'akov Edrey and Eitan Cabel and attorney David Libai.

The Ministerial Committee on Symbols and Ceremonies, which is headed by Edrey, decided Monday that the conflict should officially be called a war.

The ministerial panel made its decision in accordance with a second panel created to choose the name, which was appointed by Defense Minister Amir Peretz and headed by Libai. The second committee was formed in parallel to Edrey's committee, which is subordinate to the decisions of the cabinet.

Until now, state representatives have avoided calling the battles against Hezbollah a war, and have used words such as operation, campaign, or fighting."

2. Now it's official: Conflict with Hezbollah to be known as 'Second Lebanon War'
Mostly posted for this excerpt, which merits close consideration:

---

"Do not think the army will be ready in three months," Ashkenazi told the security cabinet during the meeting. A team of senior IDF officers briefed the ministers on the lessons of the Second Lebanon War.

Ashkenazi said several years would be needed. Preference would be given to forces likely to participate in dangerous operations.

He told the security cabinet that when he took over as chief of staff, he considered interfering with the IDF's in-house investigations into its problems and performance during the war, and said he decided not to do so. Dan Halutz was chief of staff during the war.

The head of the General Staff's doctrine and training department, Brigadier General Danny Biton, presented the security cabinet with the main findings of more than 20 IDF in-house investigations since the war.
