Israel has returned to the level of population growth characteristic of the 1980s before the waves of immigration from the former Soviet Union, according to the new Statistical Abstract of the Central Bureau of Statistics, issued each year before Rosh Hashana.

At the end of 2002, 6.631 million people lived in Israel, 1.9 percent more than 2001. This is the first time since the 1980s that the population grew less than 2 percent. Jews make up 76.8% of the total, compared to 77.2% in 2001.
