What kind of "martyrdom" actions do they have in
mind? Rabbi Elitzur Segal, who used to teach at
the Yeshiva of the Jewish Idea, published an
article after Baruch Goldstein carried out the
1994 massacre at the Cave of the Patriarchs in
Hebron, entitled "Killing Oneself for the Sake
of Heaven." Rabbi Segal writes: "Nowhere in the
rabbinic literature can we find a condemnation
of these actions. On the contrary, these people
are praised for their ways. And it is simple
and clear for anyone who understands even a
little about the ways of warfare, that there
are situations in every war when a person must
put himself into a situation of certain
death."
Segal, referring to the war against the Arabs
and not a dispute between Jews, wrote: "It is
permissible to carry out an action that leads
to death ... like the way the holy Dr. Baruch
Goldstein did in Hebron ... We see that even
more certain death, such as detonating oneself
with a grenade together with one's enemy, is
also undoubtedly permissible and commanded." http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=344379&contrassID=2&subContrassID=14&sbSubContrassID=0&listSrc=YPlease read whole article for lots more.
