The 'military solution' works
The 'military solution' works

Since Operation Defensive Shield, however, the trend has been reversed: Israel has steadily improved its capabilities, particularly in the intelligence field, while the terrorist organizations have seen their supplies of arms, money and trained personnel shrink under Israel's onslaught. As long as Israel maintains the military pressure, this positive trend can be expected to continue.

Second, Israel has repeatedly made the mistake of agreeing to "give peace a chance" by temporarily suspending its military activity and the terrorist organizations have exploited every such respite to regroup. There is, however, reason to hope that the lesson has finally been learned: Not only did Israel reject the most recent Palestinian cease-fire offer out of hand, but the United States, which pressured Israel into most of the previous truces, fully supported this stand. In fact, even Britain, hitherto a staunch Palestinian supporter, admitted that another truce is a "non-starter" (to quote its new ambassador, Simon McDonald) absent serious anti-terror activity by the PA. If Israel can refrain from falling into the truce trap again, its war on terror is likely to be even more successful.

Finally, it is clear that Israel has not been prosecuting the war as intensively as it could. It was only in August, for instance, that it began targeting senior Hamas personnel, and it stopped again after a mere few weeks. Were Israel to stop exercising such misguided restraint, this would almost certainly produce improved results in the long run.

Far from proving a failure, the "military solution" has proven its efficacy over the last year. What is needed now is for the government to finally make up its mind to finish the job.

1. And off they go a marching, .... into Syria, Iran, and Lebanon.

All with the backing of PNAC, Bush, JINSA, AIPAC, and most of the members of Congress, including many Democrats, who are now as allied with PNAC's goals as any Republican.

Why don't these Dems just come out and say it, "We support Ariel Sharon, no matter how nasty and brutal he is. We support war after war in the Middle East, as long as it gets us the pro-Israel vote. We'll rubber stamp whatever PNAC/Bush/Sharon ask us to, whether it's billions for Israel, billions for wars, whatever. We support PNAC's doctrine of U.S. world domination and control of its resources, knowing even as we do, it helps G.W. Bush's re-election (sic) chances. We don't give a shit about this nation, or its children, who are sent off to fight wars for oil and Israel. We only care about getting re-elected, and in order to get re-elected, we need to keep those conservative "pro-Israel" voters (and their powerful friends in the media) happy, and keep that AIPAC money flowing. Many of us are traitors to this nation, and we don't gve a shit."

6. Yeah, Pig
Long and high may you fly...

I've run across your wisdom-full words quite often. Not once have I disagreed with your take on the I/P issue. Once again, here, you put forth the butt-ugly truth of how our 'leaders' mislead. Man, let's hope these warmongering SOB's get thrown out of office soon.

Peace....Bfree

7. Thanks BeFree .....
My "frankness" upsets some, for they cannot handle the truth. Even more, it is difficult for many to admit the depth of the corruption of our leaders. In doing so, it takes away the hope that these same "leaders" will somehow change, and bring forth truth, justice, and world peace. And some, are still holding their breath. I prefer to breathe, ...and scream.

10. Keep on keeping on, Flying Pig
This whole issue is far too important to be placed on the back burner the way the squatters in this WH have done. Hell, Clinton had them damn close to a possible solution... given another year he and George Mitchell may have succeded. Damn.

But, as you say, as long as American leaders show favoritism to Israel and sell out Peace, this situation can only lead to a military solution. And there is no way Israel can win. NO way. Israel and it's grand idea of a free democracy in the ME will be a military failure. Why can't they see it? Must be the war-mogering evil which drives their very being, eh?

Peace

14. Good point! It would clear up a lot of confusion abou the Dem party

It is not by any means just confined to this site, but there is a misconception on the part of many people that the Democrats are somehow less supportive of the Sharon regime than the Republicans.

That is just not true, and it is unfair to Democratic candidates who might be losing contributions from people who question their unwavering and unconditional support for the Israeli government's policies on Muslims in general and Palestinian civilians in particular.

The Democratic candidates, and the party itself should stand up and make it very plain that they support all the efforts that the current government has made to make good use of the hard-earned dollars of the taxpayers whom they seek to serve as President.

Why should Tom DeLay get all the credit for supporting Israel?

Why would the Democratic candidates want people whispering behind their backs that he supports Israel more than Clark, or Dean or Kerry?

Whenever one of these stories comes out, like the UN report about the Policy of Starvation, every single Democratic candidate should get out a statement IMMEDIATELY expressing their support for the policy and reassuring Little Israel that if elected, they will make sure that Tel Aviv gets all the money it needs to do whatever it takes to keep on the narrow but certain path of GOD's ROAD MAP!

Don't let the Repukes hijack this key issue!

2. Finish the Job??
And what, pray tell, would that mean - "Finish the job"?

Now that the war in the Middle East has spread to two fronts - Israel and Iraq - finishing the job was never closer, eh? Is that why I am reading this crap? "Far from proving a failure...". Oh yeah, everything is just peachy keen over there... like hell it is.

All the money, all the dead innocents, all the blasted munitions, have produced what? An attack on America, more enemies united against the US and ill-will built up against us. I call it a failure. Plain and simple... Israel, in its present state, is a failure. Israel has killed hundreds of thousands of it's neighbors and will have to kill many, many more before its over. 'Tis a misreable failure.

4. Your math is faulty
According to you, "Israel has killed hundreds of thousands of it's neighbors." Care to tell me where you got THAT math?

You tell me how many they killed, you so smart.

Actually I should have written "Tens of Thousands" But hey, it could be hundreds. They've been going at it for over fifty years with in-numerable attacks. If Israel killed, on avaerage, 2,000 a year.... they'd be getting close to Hundreds. I'll bet they are close. But, if you've got the numbers, tell us, Muddled, just how many. I'll bet you have no idea....

9. A couple points
It was your claim. It is up to you to cite it. I did quick math and calculated that, with only a few real fighting wars during that time, that a couple hundred thousand was over the top.

You are right that there have been "in-numerable attacks" against Israel. But Israel keeps holding on despite that.

Perhaps, if the Arabs accepted Israel as a neighbor, the death toll would be a hell of a lot lower on both sides.

11. Figures
You have no idea, do you? And, I'll bet, you don't want to know how many neighbors Israel has killed.

Israel would probably be acceprted as a neighbor if they would be a good neighbor. I damn sure wouldn't want the present day Israel as my neighbor. I'd fight those bastards to the death. Oh wait... that's why there's suicide bombers!! People are fighting the regime to their very death.

A military solution? Israel is vastly outnumbered. Israel is doomed if a military solution is their solution.

12. LOL
You are the one who cited a figure that you had to backtrack on because you can't back it up. Don't blame me for your failing.

What exactly is a "good neighbor?" Does that mean you don't fight back when your enemies attack you time and time again. Or does that mean you are just supposed to accept that almost all of your neighbors support and sponsor terror against you?

The real problem with the suicide bombers is that they take others with them. If they would all just do us the courtesy of ending their own lives peacefully, the world would be a better place.

As for a military solution, your reasoning has been the Arab reasoning for 55 years. But Israel is still there.

13. 'hundreds of thousands' is probably quite off
Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 10:04 PM by Aidoneus
100,000 may be close, tho'. At least 1/5 of that in Lebanon (perhaps as much as 30,000 in all), I think at least 20,000 Egyptians died in the '67 war, there's around 2/5->1/2 of that figure already. Perhaps there's some location where such figures are collected.

16. 100 Thousand and counting
That's 100,000 people killed by weapons made mostly in America, no doubt. And the carnage continues with no end in sight. And still we see posted here crap that a military solution is working.

What the hell is the end to the means? Is it the Israeli intent to kill of all the Arabs? Surely that is wht any Arabian must think, ie, "Israel will not stop until they have killed off everyone of us. They have the weapons to do so, and the support of the US, is that what their intention is, to kill us all?"

I offer no quarter to anyone who supports such an evil and anti-human way of being free.

Peace

Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 11:15 PM by Aidoneus
aspects of '47->'49 are debatable, '73 being the only real occasion that "the Arabs" had "attacked Israel" as a distinct war, even then it was strictly over and within Arab land that Israeli military was occupying (and later colonizing).

If the Arabs had tried peace instead of war we wouldn't be in this mess.

all of those were Israeli aggressions.. damn the Arabs for getting in the way of Israeli tanks and bombs? Is that your point?

You might find history debatable, I don't.

What a strange thing to say.. either a ridiculous vacuity, or it reveals a remarkably authoritarian streak.
