Bush is raising Jewish funds from Republicans — and Democrats
cut

While all accounts seem to suggest that Bush is getting unprecedented financial support in the Jewish community, it is still unclear whether that financial support will translate into votes come November 2004.

Jews traditionally have voted largely for Democratic candidates in national elections, but Republicans are hoping that support for Bush´s foreign policy will mean a much stronger showing than the 19 percent he garnered in 2000.

In the fund raising realm, several big Republican donors, who contributed millions of dollars in "soft money" before new campaign finance laws were put into effect, also were leaders of the organized Jewish community.

This time around, Bush is raising funds outside the normal Republican Jewish circle, finding a new crop of donors willing to contribute to a candidate they see as fervently pro-Israel.

"I think that Israel, the war on terrorism and homeland defense are all coming together right now," said Matthew Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition. He said Jewish donors "see leadership from this president in waging the war on terrorism as a critical thing."

This is an alarm. Democrats like Dean must stay in line and fleas like Kucinich pushed aside. Strong support of Israel will be needed for a Democrat to win.

It is not selling out to support a little democracy fighting off terror.

14. Agreed. I'll stand with MLK, Ghandi and Mandella on this one.
Everyone has soothing, idealistic buzzwords, but Israel's practice of "democracy" is pre-1950s. This is a state that supported apartheid in South Africa and practices much the same at home.

7. "fleas like Kucinich" ? Where have I heard that term used to describe
people before?

Oh, right. Heinrich Himmler used to call Jews that.
http://www.yad-vashem.org.il/about_holocaust/holocaust_antisemitism/racism.html

(snip)

Racism was a major element in Nazi ideology; the Nazis were able to ÒjustifyÓ their horrible actions by making Jews seem less human. Thus, by the time physical attacks were initiated against the Jews, it seemed they even deserved what was coming to them. Dietrich Eckart, one of HitlerÕs early political advisors, said that no one would have left the Jews alive throughout history had they known what their true nature really was, and what their evil plans for the world were, Hitler truly believed these ideas; he said that an inferior race, like the Jews, had more in common with the apes than with superior human races. Heinrich Himmler motivated his soldiers to carry out his murderous orders by dehumanizing the Jews completely. He claimed that the Jews were similar to fleas and mice Ð disgusting lower forms of life that deserved to be exterminated. The Nazis tried to convince the German people of the truth of their claims by creating propaganda films that visually proved racist theory.

(/snip)

You've probably already voted in this poll in GD (and I have a pretty good idea which way), but check out this post anyway.

hoe exactly is Kucinich a "flea?"

Do you take offense at him standing strongly against Bush? Do you take offense with him having a reasonable stance on the I/P conflict? Do you take offense with his stance against the vile and blatantly immoral war in Iraq?

Why do you think American Jews universally support Israel?

I am an American Jew, and I support Kucinich.

Tikkun and APN are made up of Jews. There are dozens of other pro-palestinian insitutions that are Jewish in membership.

What we're seeing here is increased donations afrom conservatives who support hawks like Joe Lieberman anyway.

10. Screw Israel !!!!!!!!
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 06:58 PM by eablair3
At least screw the segment of Israel that has been building the settlements for the past 35 years, taking the land of the Palestinians, bulldozing their houses, killing kids, killing women and other innocents ..... etc, etc.

These Israeli policies are heading no where good for a large part of the world.

The Dems need to show some integrity and stand up to these wrong and unjust policies and actions of Israel.

But, I realize that is not likely to happen for many or most Dems. And, I often wonder why that is?

11. I have a difficult time understanding Bush's allure among Jews.
This subject's sensitive nature make me wary of broaching this.

Why would anyone of Jewish heritage support a man whose family fortune was built with the blood and slave labor of Jews in concentration camps? Family money in a blind trust my ass!

There are two concentration camp survivors in my wife's family - people who still bear the tattoos on their arms. It makes me wonder if other members of said family would have voted for Bush had they known that his grandfather financed the construction of Dachau and Auschwitz.

Most of the Jews that I know - even those who are far right on Israel/Palestine - dislike Bush.

This "worry" shouldn't be one.

18. Uncle Ed voted for Bush and still supports him.
My wife's Uncle Ed who lives in Chicago voted for Bush because he had (1) Clinton fatigue and (2) labored under the illusion that a Republican president would build upon the stock market successes of the Clinton years. Ironically, it is his side of the family whose members both perished in and survived Nazi concentration camps.

Even some homosexualss and african-Americans support Bush, but that doesn't indicate that as a demographic they do.

But take this from one who is one: Most don't.

16. hey, they just voted Arnold in
as Governor in California, and his father was a Nazi. Arnold had support from certain people of Jewish heritage. They kept saying you can't hold the son accountable for the father. So, what's the difference wrt to W? W is submissive to Sharon and gives big money to Israel, as well as backs Israel's actions, even if he has told Israel not to take such and such an action. Israel has got to really like W. He does everything Sharon wants. Sharon says jump, and Bush says how high. :)

32. from my personal experience
I agree with your post 13. I don't know any neocon pro-AIPAC people who are Jewish, at least as far as I know. But, in my experience, the people of Jewish heritage that I know, all are very much against Bush & Co. But, I don't know how much my experience or your experience really means overall.

It does seem like several leaders of major national Jewish and pro-Israel orgainzations, not only support Bush, but the Repugs in general. I think many of them play both sides, and just want to be on the side that wins to have influence with who has the power.

20. This must truly be some baffling cognitive dissonance.
I mean this with all sincerity. Among those who know how the Bush fortune was built, I wonder how much the will struggles against voting for the Nazi heirs as they make that choice in the voting booth.

i think his support among jews is overblown. it comes from mainly those who are conservative politcally and vote republican (whether registred as repubs or dems) anyways.

Was it Eitam who said that soon Israel would have the Palestinians crawling around like cockroaches in a bottle?

"When we have settled the land, all the Arabs will be able to do about it will be to scurry around like drugged cockroaches in a bottle." Raphael Eitan, Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces, New York Times, 14 April 1983.
