Dr. James J. Zogby: More Americans vote for Middle East peace
Repays close reading.
Disclosure: Mr. Zogby is of Middle Eastern descent.

Presidential candidates supporting multilateralism over pre-emptive unilateralism and
favouring a balanced approach to Middle East peace-making will find strong support
among US voters.

---

When asked, however, how they feel the administration should pursue Middle East
peace, only 16 per cent say that the administration "should lean towards Israel", and
one per cent say it "should lean towards the Palestinians".

A substantial majority of 73 per cent says that the administration "should steer a middle
course between the two parties". This decided tilt towards a balanced approach has
been in evidence for a number of years, but has grown significantly in recent polling.

---

And while more Americans blame the Palestinians for the current violence (19.5 per
cent as compared to 4.5 per cent who blame the Israelis), 69 per cent now blame both
sides equally.
All of this raises an intriguing question: what if a candidate in fact called for a more
"evenhanded policy"?

6. The piece doesn't say being "even-handed" won't get you ripped.
It will.
It says you will have wide support in taking that position.
All the more reason to savage you before the idea spreads further.

10. I also liked this sentence
"However, almost 60 per cent acknowledge the concern that 'America is an imperial power that acts on its own, regardless of world opinion".

Isn't that the truth?!:grr:

13. I'm glad to read
that 73% of Americans say the administration "should steer a middle course between the two parties," and that 69% now blame both sides equally. That's progress. It's slow but definitely an improvement. The solution to the I/P conflict must be fair to both, and not favor one side only.

16. I think that is a no-brainer
We have more problems with Bush* than just his attitude regarding the I/P conflict. We have huge problems at home and don't get me started on Iraq or his "war on terror." I think the fact that he needs to be replaced is the basic reason we are all on DU!
