U.S. envoy John Wolf not returning for now
U.S. envoy John Wolf not returning for now
Ha'aretz, 20 October 2003

The U.S. Administration has informed the Israeli government that special envoy John Wolf will not be returning to the region for now. Wolf is in charge of overseeing the implementation of the U.S.-backed road map for Middle East peace.

The U.S. will only decide if and when to send Wolf back to Jerusalem once the future of the new Palestinian government, led by Ahmed Qureia, becomes clear. Washington believes that at this time, when there is no clear "address" or authority on the Palestinian side, there is no point in Wolf being sent back to the area.

...

Wolf went back to the U.S. on leave in late September, telling the Israelis that he would return after around 10 days. Washington, however, is in no rush to send him back to the area.

Comment: Aluf Benn isn't letting this one go, so Kudos to him. :)

1. Warren Zevon almost got it right
Every time I hear the word "envoy" it reminds me of Warren Zevon's song....

"The Envoy" by Warren Zevon

"Nuclear arms in the Middle East
Israel is attacking the Iraqis
The Syrians are mad at the Lebanese
And Baghdad does whatever she please
Looks like another threat to world peace
For the envoy
Things got hot in El Salvador
CIA got caught and couldn't do no more
He's got diplomatic immunity

He's got a lethal weapon that nobody sees
Looks like another threat to world peace
For the envoy
Send the envoy
Send the envoy

Whenever there's a crisis
The President sends his envoy in
Guns in Damascus
Oh, Jerusalem

Nuclear arms in the Middle East
Israel is attacking the Iraqis
The Syrians are mad at the Lebanese
And Baghdad do whatever she please
Looks like another threat to world peace
For the envoy
Send the envoy . . .
Send for me"
