Israeli rabbis: Thou shalt kill civilians

http://www.presstv.com/detail.aspx?id=79947§ionid=351020202

Four leading Israeli rabbis have sanctioned the murder of civilian population in the Gaza Strip amid the Israeli onslaught on the region.

"When a population living near a Jewish town sends bombs at the Jewish town with the purpose of killing and destroying Jewish lives there, it is permitted, according to Jewish Law, to fire shells and bombs at the firing sites, even if they are populated by civilians," read a ruling issued by Rabbi Yaakov Yosef, Rabbi Dov Lior, Rabbi Shalom Dov Wolpe and Rabbi Meir Mazuz.

The four added that a warning should be issued prior to any attacks; however, they reiterated that the army's response to rocket or mortar fires may be immediate "even if there is no time for a warning."

2. PressTV seems to be Iran-based - hence not unbiased!
Not that I hold much of a brief for Shas, or for the religious-right of any religion; but still.

17. You chose to post it. You can read what it implies.
"Thou shalt" is the phrasing of a religious injunction. The rabbis didn't pronounce an injunction to kill civilians. They spoke to the permissibility of putting civilians at risk in the course of defending civilians. The headline is more about getting blood for matzoh.

14. Yes, of course the info is made up
Of course bringing a quote from the Iranian PressTV, it doesn't surprise me that it's all lies and exaggerations.

Here is the original from Haaretz

A criminal investigation for incitement to racism will be opened against 29 rabbis who signed two advertisements urging people not to hire Arabs

this may not be to your liking and you would be within your rights to consider this racist but it is NOT under any circumstances calling for the killing of civilians (or anyone else for that matter).

9. Or from an Israeli source

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/129121

“When lethal rockets emanate from a civilian population bordering on a Jewish town, Jewish Law permits the firing of shells at the site – after giving sufficient warning.”

This is the gist of a Halakhic ruling issued on Tuesday by four leading rabbis in various sectors of the Jewish public. Rabbi Yaakov Yosef (eldest son of former Chief Sephardic Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef), Rabbi Dov Lior, Rabbi Shalom Dov Wolpe and Rabbi Meir Mazuz are signed upon the ruling.

I bolded the part that I didn't see in the Iranian source. It goes into more detail into that in the second half of the article.

Edit: OK, so I didn't read the Iranian source closely enough. My mistake.

16. Nowhere to run

From the New York Times article "Israel Rejects 48-Hour Cease-Fire Plan":

The Nakhala family, which lives next to the compound , was inspecting the damage on Tuesday morning and recounting the utter fear and panic they all felt as the missiles hit.

“We have no shelters in Gaza,” said the father, Osama Nakhala. “Where shall we go? I also have to worry about my mother, who is 80 years old and paralyzed.”

And this incredible video from Al Jazeera:

15. That's the mainstream position
Edited on Wed Dec-31-08 02:11 PM by aranthus
of just about any of the major religions, not to mention standard military practice. It is not murder to fire at attackers, even if it is possible that civilians might be killed. There is always that possibility in war. So to say otherwise would be to say that all war is a war crime, which eliminates the concept entirely.

The post is just one more empty intellectually dishonest diatribe against Israel. People are setting the bar very low if this is what they think amounts to reasoned discussion.

20. That's not it at all.
They didn't say "God hates Gazans" and you know it. They have said that when Hamas fires on Israeli civilians that the Israelis are justified in firing back even if civilians might be hit. This is how wars have been fought for centuries, and now here you are complaining about the Jews defending themselves? I don't get it.
