Palestinian president to address open Security Council meeting

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas is expected to address an open meeting of the UN Security Council to press for the immediate cease-fire in Gaza, UN officials said here Tuesday.

The 15-member council is scheduled to hold the open session on the Gaza conflict at about 5:30 p.m. EST, and President Abbas is the first to take the floor at the council meeting after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who repeated his call for an immediate end to the bloodshed in Gaza and southern Israel and said that it is regrettable the council did not take action on how to end the conflict.

The open meeting will be chaired by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, whose country holds the rotating council presidency for the month of January.

Also present at the council meeting were David Miliband, the British secretary of state for foreign affairs, Ali Babacan, the Turkish foreign minister, Condoleezza Rice, the U.S. secretary of state, Abdurrahman Mohamed Shalgham, Libyan secretary of the General People's Committee for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation, Michael Spindelegger, Austria's federal minister for European and international affairs and Alexander Yakovenko, deputy Russian foreign minister.

1. Al Qaeda Deputy Chief Blames Obama For Muslims Deaths In Gaza, Calls For Attacks

In an a new audio tape released today by al Qaeda media wing - as Sahab organization - Bin Laden’s deputy, Ayman Zawahiri accused U.S. President Barack Obama of standing behind the killing of Muslims in Gaza, and urged Muslims around the world to wage war and strike against western interests wherever and whenever they can.

Al Zawahiri also told Palestinians that they were victims of the Western Crusades against Islam. “Those raids are a gift from Obama to you before he assumes office," he said.

He then diverted his attention to President-elect Barak Obama, reminding Muslims around the world that they shouldn’t be fooled by the newly elected president. “Here is Obama...the man that the American propaganda machine tried to portray as the savior who would alter America’s policies. Here he is...killing your brothers and sisters in Gaza .. with no mercy nor compassion.”

Bin Laden’s deputy then turned to all the people angered by the scenes of the Israeli killings in Gaza, telling them that their protests and demonstrations are just not enough. “Our Islamic anger could turn into an effective response that would shake the Zionist Crusader coalition.” He urged Muslims around the word to "strike agsinst the interests of the Zionist Crusader campaign wherever you can."
