Police in Mauritania fired tear gas and used clubs Friday to beat back hundreds of rock-throwing demonstrators trying to converge on Israel's embassy to protest the invasion of Gaza.
About 30 demonstrators were lightly injured, according to Mohamed Mahmoud, a doctor at one of the main hospitals in Nouakchott, the nation's capital.
Tens of thousands of people took to Nouakchott's sandy streets to protest Israel's military action, and most of the demonstrations were calm. But a group of several hundred young people broke off from the main crowd and tried to go to the Israel embassy. The streets around the embassy are blocked by security forces.
And an Associated Press reporter at the scene saw about a dozen police officers injured, none seriously, mostly by rocks.
