CARE halts aid deliveries amid Gaza bombing

Atlanta-based international aid organization CARE was forced to suspend distributions in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, officials said.

Intense bombing in Gaza City shook the CARE warehouse and staff distribution center amid plans to deliver supplies to area hospitals and clinics, and baby food and blankets to shelters.

“This is the first day CARE has been forced to totally suspend activities in Gaza,” Martha Myers, CARE’s West Bank and Gaza country director, said in a news release.

“This is a tragic situation,” Myers said. “Desperately needed supplies are ready to be distributed today, but we cannot reach the people in need because of the bombing.”

CARE Chief Executive Helene Gayle called for some reprieve from the fighting to let humanitarian aid reach those in need. She said her organization could not reach the hundreds of new mothers and infants who need medical attention.
