Islamic hard-liners in Indonesia are calling for the closure of the country's only synagogue as a protest to Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Protesters enraged by Israel's three-week-long operation in Gaza marched to the synagogue's gates chanting, "Go to hell, Israel!"

The only Jewish religious site in the world's most populous Muslim state - which has no rabbi and only a few followers - then closed its doors.

Right, so Indonesia wants the Israelis to leave, but not to come to their country.

12. That a small group, not national policy

- Try being a Bahá'í in a muslim country
- Try building a chrstian church in Saudi, Egypt, or any other muslim nation
- Try being a non-muslim in a muslim area of India, Indonesia, and parts of London or Paris.

Some religions in practice are much more tolerant of their neighbors than others...to lump them all together as being of the same stripe is nonsense.

Let's stop drinking the Kool-Aid and clinging to myths. The ultra-religious enjoy special privileges and influences that far outstrips their numbers. The increasing influence of the religious right in Israel poses as much of a threat to Israel's freedoms as the Islamic radicals sworn to Israel's destruction.

Of course, we Americans sure got a lot of room to talk about Israel since we ourselves have allowed the pernicious influence of religion to threaten our democratic institutions and personal liberties.

However it is still a secular state - certainly moreso than most of the other states in the region.

The religious right in Israel is powerful and dangerous, but is kept in check by the majority of the population who do not adhere to their views.

I don't think the same can be said for many of the countries across the Middle East.

I share your concern about the power of the religious right in the US as well.
