Israel opens border clinic for injured Gazans

EREZ CROSSING, Israel: Israel has opened a field clinic on the Gaza border to treat the sick and injured of the embattled strip.

Israeli government officials said the clinic would treat and facilitate evacuation for Gazans to Israeli hospitals.

Minister of Social Affairs Isaac Hertzog said Sunday the clinic would treat "as many people in need as possible for the well-being of the citizens of Gaza."

The clinic had a laboratory, an X-ray machine and five rooms, each containing one bed. Three more beds were in a hallway.

3. Olmert tells Clinton Israel will provide aid for Gaza

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert spoke on the phone with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and told her Israel is interested in continuing the Middle East peace process, and that the State would do its utmost to provide civilians in Gaza with humanitarian aid.

Miri Weingarten of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel said the Israeli army has repeatedly refused her group's requests to evacuate wounded Gazans during the war, and called the border clinic "too little, too late."

"We think that it demonstrates a cynical use of medical care for propaganda, meaning that when Israel wants to correct its public image, it can and will evacuate the wounded," Weingarten said.

A spokesman for Magen David Adom (MDA), which is operating the clinic in cooperation with the Welfare and Social Services Ministry and the Health Ministry said that so far only seven Palestinian children with cancer had arrived at the center for treatment. All had been released, he said.

Cancer being one of those instances where this clinic will come up woefully short, but it isn't supposed to be a hospital, so it is understandable. I just hope more people get help, especially those with life-threatening injuries.

That means they were told to go away and refused care. Unless you want to argue that cancer is curable in one office visit. See what humanitarians they are. Good for them. Hooray. That almost makes murdering hundreds of children OK.
