Israel's 'Refuseniks' Come To Baltimore
Jewish Times (Baltimore), 21 October 2003Alex Maor stood outside the prison in the rain, his mother by his side, his youngest son, Daniel, in his arms. They waited expectantly at the small window before them, yearning to see the face of Mr. Maor's son, Adam — a face they don't see very often anymore.
Adam, 19, has been held by the Israeli government for nearly a year now for refusing to serve in the army. Along with five other young men being held for their conscientious objection to fighting the Palestinians, Adam currently is the subject of a court martial, the results of which most likely will be more prison time.

"We're so encouraged to see groups here
of people who are interested in hearing these things and not being blind," she said on behalf of herself, Mr. Maor and the members of Shministim, a youth refusal movement formed by Adam and his friends.
"The Israeli army is not an army of defense," Noa told the crowd. "It is an army of occupation. It ruins Palestinian society, and it ruins our own. We expropriate Palestinian lands and kill innocent people every day. The Palestinian people feel such unending despair that they kill themselves to kill us. What the army does is help terror — we give reasons to kill us."
