Qureia, Hamas signal readiness for new hudna

Hamas officials are also in Cairo now for talks
with Egyptian officials, who are interested in
brokering another cease-fire accord, like the
one that secured a number of weeks of relative
quiet during the summer.

While there is some momentum building toward a
new hudna, mutual recriminations are also
continuing between Qureia and his Islamic
opposition. Flyers distributed by Hamas and
Islamic Jihad detailed the new Palestinian
prime minister's business ventures, especially
the PA premier's concrete factory in Abu Dis
that his opponents called "the largest concrete
supplier for the separation fence."

The PA, on the other hand, has pressured Hamas
by freezing its bank accounts and showing
initial signs of renewed security cooperation
with Israel.

Qureia needs a cease-fire accord with Hamas to
gain some breathing space that could enable him
to form a new government to replace his
emergency regime. Hamas, which has been hit
hard by the Israel Defense Forces in recent
weeks, also needs the hudna so as to regroup
and return to the streets of Gaza.
