Palestinians Stop Paying Israeli Hospitals for Gaza and West Bank Patients
JERUSALEM — Scores of Palestinian patients being treated in Israeli hospitals, a rare bright spot of coexistence here, are being sent home because the Palestinian Authority has stopped paying for their treatment, partly in anger over the war in Gaza.

Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem says that for the past week, no payments have come in and Palestinians whose children it is treating have been instructed by Palestinian health officials to place them in facilities in the West Bank, Jordan or Egypt.

“Suddenly we have had 57 patients dropped from our rolls,” said Dr. Michael Weintraub, director of pediatric hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplantation at Hadassah. “We have been bombarded by frantic parents. This is a political decision taken on the backs of patients.”

The Palestinian health minister, Fathi Abu Moghli, said he was examining the entire referral procedure because he was tired of adding to what he called Israel’s “oil well,” meaning the payments for Palestinian patient care. In particular, he said, he had no desire to see the wounded from the Gaza war receive Israeli care.

3.  Dr Weintraub would have done just as well

if not better in the Bush administration as he apparently has little problem with Israel's pay or die policy when it comes to Palestinians, politics indeed.

Isn't Israel withholding quite a sizable sum of Palestinian money?

4. That is disgusting beyond measure
"In particular, he said, he had no desire to see the wounded from the Gaza war receive Israeli care."

Those are you kinsmen you disgusting excuse of a human. Have some fucking compassion.

Fatah obviously will cut off their nose to spite their face.

5. perhaps you missed this part
“We already pay $7 million a month to Israeli hospitals,” he said in a telephone interview. “Since the first day of the Gaza aggression, I said that I will not send to my occupier my injured people in order for him to make propaganda at my expense, and then pay him for it."

Israel is refusing to treat those that they injured because Fatah will not pay for their treatment and apparently that is now extending to children most of whom are from the West Bank and had nothing to do with this”there could be some compassion on both sides.

And as I pointed out earlier "reputedly" Israel is withholding money from the Palestinians so could not some of those funds not be turned towards this?

6. you cannot even condemn the PA for this?
And since when is Israel refusing to treat patients?

They can't treat them if the PA doesn't send them to Israel!

7. I can condemn the PA quite easily
but at least now we know why the border clinic most likely closed lack of payment oh BTW the kids in the oncology clinic especially the BMT patients what is happening to them IS a death sentence, I know I worked in BMT for some time and ya know that is not done not even here in the US and not even to Iranian children who's families can not pay.

9. where do you get that Israel
Edited on Thu Feb-12-09 04:33 AM by shira
refuses to treat Palestinians due to lack of payments by the PA? Or that Israel is turning back Palestinian patients due to no pay by the PA?

The article points to the fact that the PA refuses to send patients into Israel for treatment, that the PA won't pay Israel anymore for medical services, and that the border clinic closed due to "no business", not that Israel refused to treat anyone.

Looks like you read an article, make up your own 'facts', and try to peddle that BS as reality.

11. and you think that means
that Israel is refusing to treat those 57 patients? I read that as the PA refusing to send those 57 patients.

8. The money they pay for care is pittance compared to what they receive
from foreign aid. They just don't care about Gazan's because they are connected to Hamas.
