NIS 30m. for settlement-freeze victims

The Finance Ministry has set aside NIS 30 million to compensate those harmed by the 10-month moratorium on new settlement construction, even though the Defense Ministry has yet to publish clear guidelines about who can apply for compensation and how to do it.

It's an initial sum and does not represent the final figure that could be needed to compensate builders and settlers whose projects have been frozen since the end of November, the Finance Ministry told The Jerusalem Post on Monday.

"If you hurt someone, you should compensate them," added MK Uri Ariel (National Union), who added that the moratorium had been in the works for weeks without any thought given to those who would be harmed.

A Defense Ministry representative said that a compensation committee existed and even though the criteria for payment had not yet been set, people did not need to wait for that criteria to apply for compensation.

He added that the government had clearly stated that it intended to pay compensation but to date only five people had applied.

2. These people have not been displaced

their building plans have simply been put on hold for 10 months. that announcement was made a bit more than a month ago so its 9 months now
