Middle East peace talks are 'doomed to fail', says Ahmadinejad

Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, today launched an angry attack on "doomed" US-brokered Middle East peace talks and urged the Palestinians to continue armed resistance to Israel.

Ahmadinejad used the annual al-Quds (Jerusalem) Day rally in Tehran to scorn the Obama administration's efforts in launching the first Arab-Israeli negotiations in nearly two years.

"What do they want to negotiate about? Who are they representing? What are they going to talk about?" the hardline Iranian leader said of the Palestinian negotiating team in Washington.

"Who gave them the right to sell a piece of Palestinian land? The people of Palestine and the people of the region will not allow them to sell even an inch of Palestinian soil to the enemy. The negotiations are stillborn and doomed."

2. If he can't distract with Israel, his citizens are going to start looking at...

...the Iranian economy. And that's something he'd very much like to avoid if possible.

Having said that, though, there really are Israelis and Palestinians (individuals and organizations) who have vested interests in a continuing conflict. Not to mention the countries who sell arms to them. It's a hellish mess.

The talks can not fail when they were only for show!

7. This is exactly why the peace talks are critical

If the PA and Israel find a solution that would enable both sides to come out as winners, and both sides make painful compromises - then Iran and Hamas lose a great deal of standing in the region.

This is precisely why we see Hamas militants striking out in an attempt to derail the process, and precisely why we hear Ahmadinajad sing the song of doom.

And there is much to be skeptical about.....given the methodology of violence Hamas is determined to derail the process, Given Netanyahu's previous rhetoric, and the same can be said of Abbas.

I still want a better future for both Israel and Palistine. I refuse to give up hope. I think the time has come that both leaders recognize that their success is directly tied to the others success. I don't know if they do see it that way....but am hopeful that they do.

Even if they do manage to do the impossible....change on the ground, and attitudes towards each other will take generations to resolve. But it begins with a step.....
