CNN poll shows rise in American sympathy for Israel

Pro-Israel feelings up since 2009, according to telephone survey of adult Americans; 82% say Israel is a friend or ally of the United States.

A new poll conducted by American news network CNN has reported that 67 percent of the American public feel sympathy for Israelis and not Palestinians, compared with 16% who claim to side with the Palestinians rather than Israel.

The poll was conducted by telephone from May 24-26. 1,007 adult Americans were asked their opinions on several different countries, including Israel.

The results show that pro-Israel feelings are on the rise in the United States. In a similar survey conducted in 2009, only 60 percent of the population sample expressed pro-Israel feelings, while 17%, one percentage point higher than 2011's poll, claimed to sympathize with the Palestinians.

1. There's a big difference between

calling someone a friend or ally, and expressing sympathy for a country. Yes, Israel is considered an ally of the United States, but does that equate to American feeling sympathy for Israel?

5. Wow, you really misrepresented the numbers. Only 48% claim to sympathize

with Israel, far cry from your above posted 60%. Also, you stated that "just 1% favors backing the Palestinians". According to the poll you posted, it's 11%.

Poll question: "In the Middle East conflict, do you think the United States should take Israel's side, take the Palestinians' side, or not take either side?"

Israel: A dismal 32% Palestine: 1% Neither: A Whopping 65%

Looks like public opinion is divided towards the flotilla.

Poll question: "As you may know, Israel recently acted to blockade ships bringing aid to Palestine, citing security concerns. Do you support or oppose Israel's actions?"

Favor: 40% Oppose: 40% Unsure: 20%

Although this poll was taken about a year ago, I would like to see what it is today.

...is that only 1% say the US should take the Palestinians' side, presumably your position.

So your views are supported by maybe 1% of the US population at best.

Those are Pew results, BTW.

I ask because if you read that thread, you'll find others there rejecting certain facts that don't conform to the narrative they religiously believe in. Call it "narratitis syndrome".

15. The Pew results have more weight. There's a history and not a one time poll. It shows a steady

consistency in the numbers. CNN has a one time poll.

The CNN polling data includes over 25 different polls over the past 20+ years asking the same question and tracking the results (with the most recent being May of 2011).

I guess you haven't had a chance to actually look at the poll yet.

The CNN poll looks like it skews older than the Pew poll.

In the Pew poll, they specifically asked for the youngest adult in the home to answer the questions.

From looking at the data in the CNN poll, the age categories indicate an older sample.

In 2009, the percentage choosing Israel was only 60% (with "Neither" receiving a significantly higher share of 15%)

What is significant is the age of the people who were interviewed.

In the Pew poll - "Respondents in the landline sample were selected by randomly asking for the youngest adult male or female who is now at home"

Seems from the numbers that the Pew poll skewed much younger than the CNN one.

no one under 40 that I know does, the younger in a household could well be the difference between 55 and 56 also you fail to note that Pew used 1/3 more people than CNN

The CNN poll does not indicate one way or the other, but I believe they are still land-line only.
