Anti-Muslim Facebook Posts by Netanyahu’s Son Draw Fire

The Israeli prime minister’s 19-year-old son posted disparaging comments about Arabs and Muslims on his Facebook page, an Israeli paper reported Friday.

Earlier this year, Yair Netanyahu posted that Muslims “celebrate hate and death,” the Haaretz daily reported. After Palestinian assailants entered a West Bank settlement and stabbed five members of an Israeli family to death, he wrote that “terror has a religion and it is Islam.”

A lawyer for the Netanyahu family, David Shimron, said the comments were those of a “teenager” and were “taken out of context in an attempt to defame the prime minister and his family,” Shimron said in a statement provided to The Associated Press.

How can a comment like "terror has a religion and it is Islam.” be “taken out of context in an attempt to defame the prime minister and his family,”??

1. A link, perhaps?
"an Israeli paper" could mean anything.

3. Apologies, the paper in question is Haaretz, as reported by Reuters....

"Terror has a religion and it is Islam," the Haaretz newspaper said Yair Netanyahu, who is also a soldier in the Israeli army, wrote after a Jewish family was killed in March in the occupied West Bank.

7. The context involves John Galliano, Udi Fogel, and Ashton Kutcher
Edited on Fri Jun-24-11 04:19 PM by oberliner
According to another article on this story:

Some of the comments were posted on the Facebook page of Ashton Kutcher, the Hollywood actor. John Galliano, a designer, had just been fired by Dior after an anti-Semitic rant. Kutcher had asked his followers: "Do you think Galliano would have been fired if he had demeaned Muslims?"

Netanyahu, writing under a profile named "Jessie Netan," said that he was "disappointed" at such a pronouncement a day or so after terrorists killed five members of a family in an Israeli settlement.

Other commenters engaged Netanyahu. He responded "Terror has a religion and it is Islam. Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslim."

Pretty much the standard Sean Hannity/Ann Coulter, et al party line.

9. They are comments one can hear on Fox News or RW talk radio regularly
I'm not sure what is so shocking.

Plus, these comments were made months ago - why is the story only newsworthy now?

It's not like he was speaking on behalf of the IDF or the Israeli government.

He was writing under a pseudonym (as most of us are) on Ashton Kutcher's Facebook page.

12. Dumb stories like this and made up stories about stoning a dog
Seem to be the one's that grab people's attention.

What do you think should happen in this case?

Is there some next step that you feel would be appropriate at this point?

11. Just in case and for the record
I do not find Yair Netanyahu's comments 'shocking' any more than I found Willow Palin's homophobic Facebook comment 'shocking' which is not at all
