Israeli Arabs more likely to be convicted for crimes than their Jewish counterparts, study shows
Study commissioned by Israel's Courts administration and Israel Bar Association finds that 48.3 percent of Arabs receive custodial sentences for certain crimes, compared to 33.6 percent of Jews.

<snip>

"Arab Israelis who have been charged with certain types of crime are more likely than their Jewish counterparts to be convicted, and once convicted they are more likely to be sent to prison, and for a longer time. These disparities were found in a recent statistical study commissioned by Israel’s Courts Administration and the Israel Bar Association.

The study found that 48.3 percent of Arabs who were convicted of violence, property crimes or drug or weapons offenses received custodial sentences, compared to 33.6 percent for Jews. The average prison sentence was nine and a half months for Jews and 14 months for Arabs.

In their summary the researchers wrote that the principal finding was that Israel’s justice system tends to deal more harshly with Arab defendants when it comes to conviction rates, sentencing rates and the length of the sentences.

The study sought to examine the link between ethnicity and harsher sentencing for violent crimes, including assault and battery, as well as drug and weapons offenses and property crimes. It was conducted by professors Giora Rahav, Ephraim Yaar and Yoram Rabin.

A summary of the research findings was submitted to the courts, but the study has not been published."

so it's not something peculiar to Israel and besides 'we all know' Israeli Arabs have it better in Israel than they would anywhere else in the Arab world, just like American Blacks have it better than African Blacks so really there's nothing to complain about move along nothing to see here folks

:sarcasm:

2. I think you're raising a straw man.
The point of arguing that it happens elsewhere is not to deflect every criticism of Israel. It's to prevent people from using a universal fault to criticize Israel only (which is unfair), or to demonize Israel's existence (which is unconscionable). There may be some who raise the issue of Arab civil rights in Israel in good faith, but there are so many who don't, that pro-Israelis react to the presumed bad faith. Likewise, there may be some pro-Israelis who feel that they have to be defensive about every critique on Israel, but I believe that most of us recognize that Israel has its faults.

4. Now I'm confused.
You posted what one would suggest that a pro-Israel poster might write, and then followed it with the sarcasm sign. That seemed to me to mean that you thought that the pro-Israelis write such things to deflect criticism rather than for a serious purpose. If that was not your intent, then what did you mean?

8. Why are you confused?
Is it because your hasabra manual does not cover what to do next? Maybe you didn't read it thoroughly enough because when all else fails just scream the usual accusation of anti-semitism to deflect from Israeli crimes.

6. Just another example of the callous disregard for human rights by the "only democracy in the ME"
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 10:42 PM by Dick Dastardly
Calling Israel a democracy is a sick joke. Its more like "the only democracy anywhere" that allows such things to occur and finds it acceptable.
Obviously since its an Israeli study its probably a lot worse than they report.

I am sure we will get a lot of hasabra justifying such human rights violations along with accusations of anti semitism because Israel has been criticized.
