Report: Three Egyptians Took Part In Terrorist Attacks On Southern Israel
At least three of the perpetrators of the terrorist attack on the road to Eilat last Thursday were Egyptian citizens, according to a report in the Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Yaoum.

The report, based on a probe carried out by the Egyptian security forces, says that the three were members of an extremist Islamic group. One of them had escaped from an Egyptian prison during the revolution against Hosni Mubarak.

In addition to the three, five Egyptian policemen and soldiers were also killed in the various firefights.

Haaretz has learned that 12 terrorists, in four groups, carried out the attack. The groups were dispersed over an area 12 kilometers long. At least some of the attackers wore brown uniforms, similar to those used by the Egyptian Army.

1. so will Israel be demanding an apology from Egypt?
perhaps Israel will be sending the Egyptian envoy packing

this line seems to insinuate that the 5 Egyptian policemen and soldiers were actually terrorists or somehow not in their place to be where they were

5. I think you have 8 dead Egyptians, three of whom were participants in the operation.
More details coming out now, sounds like a real mess.

6. I do too,
however my comment was cynical more on Ha'aretz's over careful wording, if memory serves the initial reports of the attack seemed to indicate that some of the participants were Egyptian, no great surprises there the rest IMO has been a exercise in 'closing the barn door after the horse got out' sort of thing at least on Israel's part

7. Never assume malice where incompetence will do the job.
I did and do see your point, but I think it was a mistake, and anyway one can never prove otherwise, so it will go nowhere.

From what I can tell, there was a good deal of "fog of war", and some of it intended too.

3. and some would like us to think the Egyptian uprising has no foreign policy agenda
the events effectively show how much has changed in just a few months following the downfall of the US-Israeli pharaoh.

Not sure what you are suggesting.

8. Things are a little different with the lapdog Mubarak gone
granted than Tantawi is not really much better than pharaoh and really represents a continuation of the Sadat-Mubarak regime (or rather, a tottering attempt to do so), it is clear that Egypt's popular and even quasi-official policies are more strongly against Israel than the 40 years of obedient dictatorships that preceded, and it can be expected that future series of events will reflect this change--events like that from a few days ago, for example.
