Palestinians: U.S. prevention of statehood bid shows 'disdain' for Arabs
Washington fears the Palestinians' move at the United Nations could further snarl flagging U.S. efforts to revive Middle East peace talks.

By Reuters

The United States is showing "disdain" for Arabs by trying to prevent the Palestinians from gaining statehood recognition at the United Nations, a senior Palestinian official said on Wednesday.

Washington fears the Palestinians' move at the United Nations, expected later this month, and could further snarl flagging U.S. efforts to revive Middle East peace talks, which broke down last year following a row over Jewish settlements.

Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said U.S. policy now appeared confined to one point: stopping the Palestinians from embarking on their diplomatic initiative at the United Nations.

"The subject is not settlements, or Palestinian independence or the rights of the Palestinian people, or halting the criminal violations perpetrated by the settlers against the Palestinian people," he said.

"All this is being ignored and the only issue has become the issue of us not going to the United Nations," he told Voice of Palestine radio.

1. Would that be disdain
for the same Palestinians who were cheering on 9/11? Yeah, I can see why they suspect us of disdain...

2. Dunno. Tell me what their names were and whether they're organising the statehood bid...
Or else it comes across as blaming all Arabs for the behaviour of a few, and that isn't a very nice thing to do, is it?

3. Although the Palestinian official here is lumping all Arabs in with Palestinians
Just because the US may be showing "disdain" for Palestinians as a result of its response to their bid for statehood ought not to translate into the US showing disdain for Arabs, generally.

Isn't his statement just the flip side of the same concern you raised?

How is it fair to extrapolate from the US position on the Palestinian statehood issue to the US showing disdain for Arabs as a much wider group?

10. You think of the Arab League as representative of Arabs generally?
That is really interesting.

12. The Arab League represents Arab countries and there for represents Arabs
your contention that it must be the Arab public in its entirety seems a bit of nitpicking

14. so the Arab League doesn't represent Arab countries?

15. You are the one claiming it does
The US policy is "an affront to Arabs" because of the Arab League's position?

16. and just what are you refuting? That the Arab league represents Arab countries?
That Arabs live in Arab countries or that Arabs do not support a Palestinian state? while most of the Arab spring protests concern domestic policies within Arab countries the Arab League as it would apply here is not about domestic policy

it would seem that your hairsplitting to win some rhetorical point

17. Not taking the Arab League position is an "affront to Arabs"
I guess that means not taking the Jewish State's position is an "affront to Jews"
