Attack on Israeli embassy unites Egypt in surprising ways
Edited on Sun Sep-11-11 02:41 AM by pelsar
I'm impressed.....mainly for their guts to speak out (and the glimmer of hope that it gives)

"We demand to know how this break-in of the Israeli embassy was even permitted, how the security forces suddenly disappeared before the break-in and returned with reinforcements afterward in order to disperse the demonstrators. How did the security forces let this group break in, when in the past a fly couldn't get near the embassy due to the security? This government cannot accept responsibility and should resign."

These questions and criticism came not from Israel but from Mostafa Shaki, a member of the executive bureau of the protest movement's primary umbrella organization, the Coalition of the January 25 Revolution Youth.

1. the comments from Mostafa Shaki are hardly a surprise nor are they unfounded
the protest that lead to the embassy break-in started as a protest against the slow pace of change by Egypt's military government the embassy was a sidebar to that and in the end to call it a distraction from a gross understatement but perhaps that is what Egyptian security (military) intended, if so it backfired oh and you left out this part

"The April 6 movement also stressed that its members were not party to Saturday's events. Most of the country's protest organizations, including the Muslim Brotherhood, did not take part in the incident that has placed the government and the Supreme Military Council in a domestic and international crisis".

4. I addressed what Mostafa Shaki said and agreed with it

and forgive me if I was mistaken however I thought you leaving out the part the Muslim Brotherhood not being involved was intentional

otherwise there is no hidden meaning the protest started out like I described as one against the Egyptian government and grew to include the Israeli embassy and that the Egyptian military may have allowed that part to proceed unchecked apparently possibly to place the focus on Israel

I said pretty much the same about the Egyptians as comment #2 which you do not seem to have a problem with except I did not use the word scapegoat

i really don't know much about what the political reasons for the various groups and their actions...just that the criticism was open and against the army, that used to be a very big "no no"..hence the glimmer of "hope'

2. I wondered if the military wasn't hoping to scapegoat Israel
to hold onto power. Guess others had that question.

Glad to see some didn't fall for the distraction. Could they come here and teach us?

5. It's a bit of a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned...
Article 31 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations states:

'3. Subject to the provisions of paragraph 2 of this article, the receiving State is under a special
duty to take all appropriate steps to protect the consular premises against any intrusion or damage and to
prevent any disturbance of the peace of the consular post or impairment of its dignity'

http://untreaty.un.org/ilc/texts/instruments/english/conventions/9_2_1963.pdf

It's very clear that appropriate steps weren't taken to protect the embassy....

9. Cool.
A serious misjudgement, if they let this happen, and I don't really see how you can say they didn't.
