Turkey: Israel's raid on Gaza flotilla was 'cause for war'

Turkey PM says Ankara showed restraint and patience 'befitting our greatness' by not taking action following the deadly 2010 incident.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan saw "cause for war" with Israel last year after a deadly raid on a Turkish ship headed for Gaza, according to a transcript of a recent interview.

State news agency Anatolia released late on Sunday what it said was an original Turkish-language transcript of an interview Erdogan gave to Al Jazeera television last week. It included elements not broadcast as well as original wording for sensitive comments that had been transmitted only in Arabic translation.

Among previously unpublished elements, Erdogan said Israel's deadly raid last year on the Gaza-bound flotilla would have justified going to war: "The attack that took place in international waters did not comply with any international law. In fact, it was cause for war. However, befitting Turkey's greatness, we decided to act with patience," he said.

2. Turkey stirs pot with Cairo talks

TURKEY'S Prime Minister was due to arrive in Cairo overnight amid speculation that he will attempt to stoke anti-Israeli sentiment following last week's assault on the Israeli embassy in the Egyptian capital.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is embroiled in a separate diplomatic war with Israel over its refusal to apologise for killing Turks on a Gaza-bound ship 15 months ago, is seeking to strengthen Turkey's alliance with Egypt to cement and extend its influence in the region. In the first such visit in 15 years, Mr Erdogan is expected to offer the post-Mubarak government aid and trade deals.

In the wake of the storming of the Israeli embassy on Friday, Egyptian security police raided the Cairo offices of the Al Jazeera news channel and detained a member of its technical staff.

The move against Al Jazeera on Sunday was denounced by a variety of Egyptian political organisations and fed a growing sense of crisis that has gripped the capital since Friday.
