Former US President Carter Backs Palestinian UN Bid

Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday he supports the Palestinians' effort to secure statehood recognition at the United Nations this month, despite White House concerns for the region.

The Georgia Democrat said he wouldn't be in favor of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' bid to win UN recognition if President Barack Obama's administration had "put forward any sort of comprehensive peace proposal." But he said Palestinians have few other options but to seek statehood since no deal is in the works.

One thing's certain, no one can accuse Carter of always deferring to the most popular standpoint.

7. On March 9, 1977 President Carter said:

"recognized borders have to be mutual...where sovereignty is mutually agreed. Defense lines may or may not conform to those legal borders. There may be extensions of Israeli defense beyond the permanent and recognized borders.

...

But I think this is going to be a long, tedious process. We're going to mount a major effort in our own Government in 1977, to bring the parties to Geneva. Obviously, any agreement has to be between the parties concerned."

Peace has to be agreed upon by the two parties and borders need to be established by the two parties.
