Israel PM Departs For UN, Says Does Not Expect 'Warm Welcome'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday at a Likud party conference that he is aware he will come under heavy pressure as he prepared to leave for New York.

"Tonight I am going to New York to speak at the General Assembly, meet with (U.S. President Barack) Obama and with other leaders," Netanyahu said. "I know the reception I received here is much warmer than the one I will receive at the UN, and exactly because of that I think we should go there and present our truth… of a people attacked over and over by those opposed to their very existence. That is the most basic truth."

Netanyahu said he has turned to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas several times, and offered him to meet, but Abbas declined. "I told him the road to peace goes through direct negotiations and not unilateral decisions at the UN," he said.

Also on Tuesday, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, said in an interview that Israel “is ready to negotiate tomorrow,” with the Palestinians.

2. The Road to Peace CANNOT Exist with Current Israeli Policy

I have not put out too many opinions with regard to the Israeli-Palestinian situation because of DU's own policies in discussing the issue. In short, my solution would probably not be conducive to maintaining said policy. But for now, let me attack the real reasons it exists.

1. Current Israeli policy is not dictated by Israeli citizens, but by the US GOP position of maintaining support of a military-industrial complex int he middle east.

2. It is not Israel per se who is at fault, but let's be honest: If needed progressive policies were implemented in the region, Israel would not be able to exist as a country, which would actually be optimal.

Please note: This is not a repudiation of the Jewish faith; rather, it is an acceptance of the diverse Arab religions and faiths that would also allow for significant political representation. To that end, I don't see how Israel could justify its existance based upon US GOP-backed military and capitalist might at the expense of the vast majority of progressive-minded Palestineans and the overall Arab community.

Yes, count me in: The current makeup of the Israeli government, and in extension, the very feasibility of Israeli statehood, should be eliminated. Pure and simple.

Maybe he should try a trip to the Hague, and turn himself in. ;-)
