China: Palestinian state must come as result of peace talks with Israel

Chinese Foreign Minister says Beijing supports independent Palestinian state that enjoys full sovereignty with East Jerusalem as its capital, urges Israel, Syria, and Lebanon to hold peace talks.

China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Monday said his government supports an independent Palestinian state, which should be the outcome of negotiations with Israel on the two-state solution.

Yang reaffirmed Beijing's support to grant membership to the Palestinian people in the United Nations.

"We support efforts to achieve the two-state solution through political negotiations so as to establish, on the basis of the 1967 borders, an independent Palestinian state that enjoys full sovereignty with East Jerusalem as its capital," Yang said in an address to the UN General Assembly.

1. well yes the Palestinians UN bid does not eliminate talks

The only meaningful way to accomplish a state for the arab population is to resume stalled negotiations, not a decree of the UN.

3. The UN doesn't create states...

Yr making the same mistake as many other folk in this forum. The vote of the UN General Assembly would grant legitimacy to any new state, and the Security Council votes on whether to admit the new state as a full member of the UN. But statehood comes about by a new state declaring itself as a state. Out of interest, does anyone know how many applications by new states for full membership of the UN the US has voted yes for, abstained on, or outright vetoed? It'd be really interesting to find out...

After Palestine becomes a state, there's absolutely no reason why negotiations can't recommence. But one thing I wouldn't expect to see from the US or the EU or any other country that's demanding there be negotiations before statehood is that not one single one of them will try to make Israel negotiate in good faith...

There is nothing inhibiting the resumption of negotiations other than the retractable PA. The vote of the UN General Assembly amounts to nothing more than a "whitepaper".
