Obama standing up for Israel at the United Nations
By Lynn Sweet on September 20, 2011 10:31 AM | No Comments
WASHINGTON--President Obama is at the United Nations this week for the opening of the annual General Assembly meeting--where the U.S. is working the global precincts to avoid a vote on Palestinian statehood.

The potential vote comes as Obama needs to shore up support in the Jewish American community, whose members have been his most steadfast supporters from the start of his political career in Chicago.

The Obama White House on Tuesday released a summary of the administration work at the UN, and a section of it deals with Obama defending Israel. The UN has been historically hostile to Israel and giving the nation a fair shake is the exception, not the rule.

From the White House: "Standing up for Israel at the UN: The Obama Administration has consistently and forcefully opposed unbalanced and biased actions against Israel in the Security Council, the UN General Assembly, and across the UN system. President Obama has pledged that we will "continue U.S. efforts to combat all international attempts to challenge the legitimacy of Israel -- including and especially at the United Nations."

"When an effort was made to insert the Security Council into matters that should be resolved through direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, we vetoed it. When the 2009 Durban Review Conference advanced anti-Israel sentiment, we withdrew. When the UN General Assembly voted for a commemoration in September 2011 of the original 2001 Durban conference, we voted against it and announced we would not participate. When the Goldstone Report was released, we stood up strongly for Israel's right to defend itself. When anti-Israel resolutions come up at the UN Human Rights Council, the General Assembly, UNESCO, and elsewhere, we consistently oppose them."

below, from the White House....

1. Obama is wrong, period on this issue! The Palestinians deserve to have a State.
Not sure why the US defends Israel at any and all levels, but I think they are wrong. If the Palestinians do not succeed in their UN vote for statehood because they don't get the required votes, then so be it. But if the US vetoes this, then let it be on there heads.

4.  Morility is not a strong point
when it comes to defending the behavior of the Israeli, the republicans are in lock step with the democrats and both parties are wrong.Justice will eventually prevail.

7.  the reason people vote for Democrats is Israel? that does not explain
how Democrats such as Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum keep winning but you did a nice dodge of the actual question

9. Abbas has said he will return to the 'negotiating table' as soon as Israel
stops attempting to create 'facts on the ground', regardless of the whining about the 10 month partial freeze really more like a light frost - no new projects in the West Bank only, anything where there was so much as a bulldozer on the site was considered under construction and building continued East Jerusalem was not included, there is really no excuse for Israel to not temporarily freeze again while talks go on unless of course this is just a handy excuse for Israel to appear to be willing when in fact its actions say otherwise, IMO Israel has all the peace it wants in the West Bank

10. Abbas and the Incredible Moving Goal Posts
We have seen time and time again where every concession made by Israel only resulted in the PA moving the goalpost of negotiations further away.
