Abbas calls on EU Parliament to support 'Palestinian Spring'
Abbas says only approached UN after negotiations failed, adding that Palestinians would not be driven to extremism; compares Palestinian detainees in Israel to captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

President Mahmoud Abbas appealed to the Council of Europe on Thursday to support the Palestinians’ bid for statehood, saying his people deserve freedom and an end to the Israeli occupation, Ma’an News Agency reported.

"Today we are at the heart of the Arab spring: we say that the hour of the Palestinian spring has struck," Abbas reportedly told the European parliamentarians, adding, "you supported the Arab spring which was seeking democracy and freedom, now the Palestinian spring has arrived, asking for freedom and an end to the (Israeli) occupation. We deserve your support."

Abbas said that he only approached the United Nations after negotiations had failed, adding that Palestinians would not be driven to extremism, Ma’an reported.

"Though there were many attempts at provocation by the Israeli side, we will not let them drive us to extremism, we will not go that way."

"Negotiations failed".

In 2000 and 2008, the Israeli side made credible offers. The PA never made a counter-offer. And in 2009, the Israeli government froze settlements for 10 months in order to kickstart negotiations. The PA refused to negotiate.

=======

"Compared Palestinian detainees to Gilad Shalit".

Many of those detainees are known terrorists or accomplices (heroes to the PA) who deliberately set out to murder innocents.

=======

"Asking for freedom"

There will be no freedom in a future totalitarian Palestinian state that denies the most basic rights to its citizens and discriminates based on gender, sexual orientation, and religion.

6. Good for Mr Abbas " "We don’t intend to isolate Israel or take its legitimacy
but we want to gain our legitimacy and decide our future and our goals without occupation and settlements," Abbas reportedly said.

it would seem that for some Palestinians gaining legitimacy deprives Israel of its legitimacy which makes little sense

7. Following PA statehood bid: PA maps still show "Palestine" to include all of Israel

Also...

PA Chairman Abbas holds up map of "Palestine" that erases Israel
http://palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=157&doc_id=3467

Anyone wonder why Abbas gets a free pass on all this? Imagine Netanyahu pushing a greater Israel, holding maps of Israel that include all Gaza and the West Bank, etc. The press would be all over it for weeks while the UN would hold special sessions...

With Abbas, it's as if it never happened.
