Jerusalem invests millions in Arab schools
<snip>

New schools, including approximately 200 classrooms, have been built in the eastern part of the city. The municipality is currently investing the unprecedented sum of NIS 300 million (about $69 million) in the planning and construction of 285 additional new classrooms for Arab schoolchildren.

<snip>

New classrooms wouldn't be as valuable without updated equipment inside them. So with the assistance of Israeli branches of companies such as Ernst & Young and Intel, the municipality rang in the new school year by distributing 1,720 mobile and desktop computers to schools, kindergartens and teachers in eastern Jerusalem.

An additional 350 new donated computers were given to schoolchildren to take home.

There was more good news for teachers: Seven classrooms in six schools in the eastern part of the city were converted into technologically sophisticated learning centers with the installation of interactive whiteboards, which can display educational software, web sites, past lessons and other features. Teachers and principals alike have been receiving computer training courses to maximize their use of these new tools.

more about illegal Israeli construction in East Jerusalem not being widely challenged for some odd reason...

1. I suspect the books won't be filled.......
with references to "pigs and apes".

Those tricky israelis.....trying to give kids an education.

We all know its a trick to eliminate the palestinians.

Whats next....allowing them to go to college?. feeding them ? free health care ?.....oh yeah....sorry.

2. Definitely a trick with Netanyahu and Lieberman running the roost.
I suspect Palestinian students will have to pledge allegiance to a menorah or sing hava negillah every morning in exchange for this dastardly rightwing wickedness.

4. The Curriculum does need more oversight
Offensive rhetoric like what you cited has occurred in the recent past and is indefensible.

3. Quite 'thoughtful of the municipality perhaps it will help aleviate this
Last year fewer than half the Palestinian children in East Jerusalem – 40,745 out of
approximately 90,000 pupils2 - attended municipal public schools. The parents of
many children for whom there was no room in the city schools were forced to send
them to private or unofficial schools operated by private companies, churches, the
Waqf , the UN, or other Palestinian organizations. Tuition is steep
Last year fewer than half the Palestinian children in East Jerusalem – 40,745 out of
approximately 90,000 pupils2 - attended municipal public schools.

The parents of many children for whom there was no room in the city schools were forced to send
them to private or unofficial schools operated by private companies, churches, the
Waqf , the UN, or other Palestinian organizations.

Tuition is steep in many of these schools, and some 5,500 students, conservatively estimated, are
not registered in any educational framework whatsoever, either public or private.3
Of those lucky enough to find space in the city public schools, thousands learn in
unsuitable structures. The city of Jerusalem rents and uses as classrooms many
structures that are not suitable – small, crowded, unventilated, and lacking support
classes or playgrounds.

In fact, half the city classrooms are below standard: 704 classrooms do not meet the
criteria compared with 656 that do (these include compulsory preschools).4 Of the
sub-standard classrooms, the city declared that 221 are operating in structures that
are “unsuitable” (188 schoolrooms and 33 preschool rooms).

8. In other words no I can not is that right?
I suspect that is because this is the 'well timed' remedy to a deplorable situation in Arab education in what you call the Jewish state

10. I think what azurnoir meant was...
that you consider East Jerusalem to be part of Israel. Not that Israel is not the Jewish state.
Which is a fair comment.

and IMO it is the "Jewish State" in the same sense that the US is the "Christian State" in that the calendar work week national religious holidays are based on Judaism in the same way that the US's are based on Christianity

Edited on Tue Oct-25-11 03:53 PM by azurnoir
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on Thursday rejected municipal recommendations and cut funding for a toddler health-care center in East Jerusalem, while approving aid to a similar center in a Jewish neighborhood.

The funds would have gone to opening a branch of the "Drop of Milk" (Tipat Halav) program, which provides prenatal and toddler health-care services in Silwan, an Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem.
