Islamists Take Over Egypt
Edited on Sat Nov-12-11 12:04 PM by shira
The Royal Library of Alexandria in Egypt, the largest and most significant library of the ancient world, is now being targeted by radical Muslims who seek to replace it with a mosque. Radical Islamic groups claim that the library's art programs, which include music and ballet dancing, spread "depravity" in Egyptian society.

The Islamist campaign against the library is taking place under the looking eyes of Egypt's military dictators, who are burying their heads in the sand and refusing to see the danger, noted columnist Mohammed al-Hamamsi. "Is the Supreme Military Council waiting until the Islamists come to power and demand, through their parliament, that the library be demolished and that a mosque be built on its site?" al-Hamamsi asked rhetorically.

....

Needless to say, the majority of the mosque sermons focus on the need to "defend Islam against Jews, Christian crusaders and Western colonialism."

In simple words, the message coming out of Egypt's Islamists is that Israel, the US and the entire West remain the number one enemy of Muslims.

2. I don't think this is what a majority of Egyptians had in mind when they rid themselves of Mubarack.
This is yet another reason as to why the Bush Doctrine and the unwarranted invasion of Iraq as well as the occupation of Afghanistan was bound to have long term consequences that helped to radicalize the religious reactionary minorities while marginalizing the moderate secular majorities in the ME.

3. Has there been election in Egypt what Islamists have "taken over"?
or is this just another of abu Tomeh's hyperventilating headlines? Indeed the elections are due on November 28 and I must wonder had the current military government in Egypt suppressed this 'movement' was there a corresponding article in the works bemoaning the 'suppression' of political parties in Egypt, I am thinking that is quite likely the case

7. Well looks like
You having problems accepting this OP.

Hence reality.

I watched as half the people twisted themselves into a Pretzel defending Ahmadinejet. Then a few years later everyone agrees he is a lunatic. - This is called Reality setting in.As opposed to wishful thinking.

(albeit slowly)

Israel has a lot at stake, but not as much as the People of Egypt do.

8. you mean the wishful thinking that Egypt will be taken over by "Islamists"
a term that has been shown to have quite a variable definition depending on who the designated 'enemy; is

IMO the OP takes a group of Egyptian and presents them as the ruling party something that is simply not true

9. Do you think it would be really bad if the Islamists take over in Egypt?
Edited on Sat Nov-12-11 03:03 PM by shira
And they're already taking over.

Are you in any way aware of what's happening to Egypt's Christian Copts recently? Do you care?

10. I am aware of what has happened with the Copts
are they now the poor victims in your mind? were they when they supported Hosni's ouster? Or are they merely now convenient?

as to the elections we'll see whop gets elected and what they do of course' though I suspect it will not matter much the narrative is already being written with blanks left to fill in'

But tell us how will democracy in Egypt be delegitimized? Will it be by a party Israel does not like being elected assuming that there is a party Israel likes we can't have more than one democracy in the ME after all

11. Non-Islamists, Copts, etc... will be the victims of Islamist rule.
Once again, will Islamist (Muslim Brotherhood) rule in Egypt be a bad thing in your opinion?

I mean after all we've seen political parties thought of as being rightist 'transformed' into liberals on the weight of a single issue, well at least according to some:)

6. The royal library of alexandria was destroyed by christian priests
Probably around 391 CE. Perhaps this odd article is referring to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibliotheca_Alexandrina, a modern research institute that appears to be doing just fine?
