Sarkozy: Palestinians must recognize Jewish state

Palestinian recognition of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people is key to any peace agreement that establishes a two-state solution, French President Nicolas Sarkozy told members of the World Jewish Congress on Wednesday.

The WJC representatives met with Sarkozy for 90 minutes at the Elysée Palace in Paris, according to sources from the gathering who spoke with The Jerusalem Post by telephone from the French capital.

Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish state has been an important point for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who has insisted that the Palestinian failure to take this step is the true stumbling block to peace.

Since 2009, the Palestinian Authority has made a strategic decision to stop negotiating with Israel and to pursue statehood independent of Israeli actions, Diker said.

1. Jewish state
If the Palestinians do that, its curtains then they can kiss their independent state goodbye, and be prepared to get run out to jordan where many say they belong, becuase they dont exist and never exsisted.
In fact it is being said that they are living a lie,and are Jordanains and need to go back to Joradan, because they are the occupiers.
They can recognise Isreals right to exist which I think most of them do,because they can not do anyhting about it anyway, but they can not be forced with a gun to their head to say it is Jewish state

2. It means nothing of the sort.
The fact that Israel is a Jewish state does not deny that there is a Palestinian people entitled to a state as well, and certainly does not waive the Palestinian claim to a state in the West Bank and Gaza. The one sense in which you may be right is if the Palestinians see themselves as victims of the Jewish state's mere existence. Then, recognizing a Jewish state undercuts their own identity.

5. The "Jewish State" meme is about the Palestinian right of return.
Essentailly, if Israel is a "Jewish State", then in theory most of those Palestinians it displaced will have to go somewheres else, or just visit, or something, at least that's the way I've had it explained to me, because Israel will have a right to remain majority Jewish.

Bernard Avishai has a new and very cogent discussion of this question in the Dec. Harper's, which I can recommend. Can't find it on the web yet.

7. Most so-called "palestinian" refugees were newcomers
anyway.

8. It was explained to you incorrectly
The original intent of the UN was to create an arab state and a Jewish state. Granted, I have very little regard for the UN but the intent you cite is a work of fiction.

3. They won't.
They should, but they won't. Some of their own commentators have admitted that doing so would mean the end of the war, but they won't. Israel is simply going to have to find a way to live with that situation.

10. I think Nick has figured it out.
When France became an appeasement monkey during the 1995's bombings , it got what it didn't want.

The lessons weren't lost on him.
