I'd be angered too if racist freaks driven by religious fanaticism were digging up my backyard to build a roadhttp://famulus.msnbc.com/FamulusIntl/reuters08-01-082114.asp?reg=MIDEASTARTAS, West Bank, Aug. 1 — Palestinian farmer Khalil Khalawi could hardly contain his agitation on Friday as he surveyed the freshly dug earth and stones at the bottom of his fields on a rocky West Bank hillside.
Armed Jewish settlers have quietly started digging a road that cuts around the hills of Bethlehem, despite being forced to stop at least once this week by the Israeli army.
Palestinians fear they want to link two settlements on either side of the city, Efrat and the Jerusalem suburb of Har Homa, as a territorial fait accompli before a Palestinian state is established in the West Bank and Gaza Strip under a U.S.-backed ''road map'' to peace.
''It will be our end if they build this road. We'll be cut off,'' Khalawi said in his fields near the village of Artas, just outside Bethlehem, where he grows grapes, olives and vegetables.
Officials at Efrat were not immediately available for comment. But Shaul Goldstein, deputy chairman of the YESHA council which represents settlers, said Jews had a God-given right to build on biblical land in the West Bank.
''This land is ours. It is part of the history of the land of Israel. Our settlements are legitimate. We have a right to live in this land according to our birthright,'' he said.
