This post breaks the rules of I/P
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 08:53 PM by brainshrub
but I want to risk getting a wanrning PM to wish all the people I've chatted with over the I/P issue a happy Chanukah, Christmas, or whatever.

While I strongly disagree about the I/P issue with some people in this room...I have to say that the discussions have been, for the most part, educated, thoughtful and well-written.

And the mods in this room rock.

The I/P room is my favorite room in DU because it is the only place where I have seen intelligent debate about the I/P issue. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's miles ahead of other conversations on this issue in other forums.

Y'all rock! And, if any of you ever find yourselves in Asheville, NC drop me a line so I can show you around & buy you a beer.

Again...HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!!

5. And The Same To You, Sir
This is a matter in which people of good heart and sound intellect may well find themselves driven to opposite stands, and in our debates we must not lose sight of that. We agree, all of us here, on many more things than we differ in.

My best wishes for the Holidays to you, Sir, and for all the best in the coming year!

May your vote be the one that puts North Carolina in the proper column come November!

10. Happy holidays to you too...
And also to the regulars in this forum, to Lithos and UGRR, and also because I'm brimming with good-will to all, even to those who have been tombstoned or are soon-to-be tombstoned. Hope you all celebrate the holiday season exactly how you want to celebrate it and manage to avoid any embarressing relatives who always seem to have a knack of appearing at this time of the year...

I'm not likely ever to be visiting yr neck of the woods, brainshrub, but the same offer's open to you if you or any of the folk here who I like and respect visit Australia anytime in the future...

Violet...

This forum is special to me for many reasons. It is probably my greatest wish to see peace and understanding throughout the world.

Perhaps the old UN peace poem is still appropriate and perhaps a small gift I can give to each and everyone of you...

http://www0.un.org/cyberschoolbus/peaceday/poem.asp

Preface by Kofi Annan:

"In their wisdom, the children whose intermingled voices gave birth to the Peace Poem know that peace is far more than the absence of war. Children know that peace comes from the heart; it lives in the way we see others; it survives in the respect we show our neighbors every day. They also know, often better than adults, that today’s world is a global village and that we are all neighbors."

Excerpts...

Peace in the world is peace in your heart.
If we do not have peace, the world will fall apart.

Dighton Middle School, Dighton, MA, US

Pieces Pieces Pieces... Stitch them with the threads
of non-violence, love, and equality. Ah hah! Beautiful dress of
Peace!

Global Vision Students (Madarai Kamaraj University), Madarai, India

Don’t shoot at me, my friend,
I’m the same as you...a man.

Varga Katalin Gimnazium, Szolnok, Hungary

If only PEACE were understood,
What couldn’t be now, in the future could.

Milwaukee German Immersion School, Milwaukee, WI, US

In the sky we see a dove
The dove means peace, the dove means love.

Canberra Church of England Girls’ Grammar School, Deakin, Australia

Why have a war—
It’s all happened before.

Lornshill Academy, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, UK

Why destroy when we could create,
Keep the peace, erase the hate.

Normal Community West High School, Normal, IL, US

We don’t like it that our fathers must be soldiers
and shoot other children’s fathers.

Engbrottsskolan, Ctvidaberg, Sweden

As I look around the world I sigh,
And think, We could at least give peace a try.

Exeter-West Greenwich Junior High, West Greenwich, RI, US

Let the sun shine in the night time and please no more dying.
Please let us have peace and no more fighting. People are dying.

26. Kick & Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah!
I'm visiting my parents in Ft. Lauderdale. Most of my neighbors growing up were are Jewish or Catholic. I've been re-connecting with old friends & family all day...and I'm having a great time. In NC I don't get to hear Jewish accents very often, and didn't know how much I missed it.
I'm filled will good cheer and eggnog!

Note to self: Perhaps the I/P issue could be solved with enough eggnog?

Happy Holidays! :toast:

37. Happy Holidays and I would also like to say Happy Kwanzaa!
The observance which is so beautiful in theory, and in ritual, is one of my favorite times of the year.

I love moderating the I/P forum along with Lithos, because so many of my own personal struggles relate to the issues of peace.

Thank you everyone for allowing me to moderate this beautiful forum, a very special place within The Democratic Underground.

UGRR

This is what Kwanzaa means in practice of the SEVEN PRINCIPLES:

Umoja (unity): To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.

Kujichagulia (self-determination): To define, name, create and speak for ourselves.

Ujima (collective work and responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brother's and sister's problems our problems and to solve them together.

Ujamaa (cooperative economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.

Nia (purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

Kuumba (creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

Imani (faith): To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
