GAZA CITY : Israeli helicopter gunships fired rockets at a car in Gaza City as night fell Tuesday, wounding 11 people after soldiers shot dead one Palestinian in the southern Gaza Strip.

The evening rocket attack targeted two militants from the radical Hamas group, who managed to escape when the first missile missed their car. A second rocket blew up the vehicle, witnesses said.

Eleven passers-by sustained shrapnel wounds, according to medics. Among the wounded were two doctors, while a house and a pharmacy were damaged.

Troops ransacked Nablus after pouring into the town in a pre-dawn operation involving some 30 jeeps and four tanks, Palestinian security sources said.

Residents were ordered out of their homes from around 4:00 am (0200 GMT) as troops conducted their searches and sealed off large parts of the Old City, or casbah, the sources added.
