Israel Prisoner List Disappoints Palestinians

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel published on the Internet on Monday a list of 342 Palestinian prisoners it plans to release on Wednesday in a bid to bolster a U.S.-backed peace plan and reformist Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas.

Palestinians cried foul, noting Israeli officials had said 540 prisoners would be freed. They want a general release of all the 6,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

"This is deceit," said Hisham Abdel-Razek, the Palestinian minister for prisoner affairs.

Publication of the roster, which included 31 men who were due to complete their sentences this month, was aimed at giving anyone opposed to a prisoner's release time to appeal to Israel's Supreme Court to keep him in jail.

Israel gave no explanation why only 342 prisoners -- 183 convicted by Israeli courts of activities ranging from stone-throwing to membership in "terrorist organizations" and 159 detained without trial -- were being released.

The number of prisoners due to be released is 443. The list was scaled back from 540:

The list of those slated for release is around 100 names shorter than the list of 540 prisoners originally put to the cabinet last
week. The Shin Bet security services removed some names from the list after further examination.

A list of 449 is published on a website to give victims an opportunity to appeal the releases. The remaining releases are prisoners serving time for criminal offences, not security related, so they are not included on the web site list.

some of the POLITICAL prisoners, just might have something POSITIVE to offer. A strong resistance and in line with that DREAM INITIATIVE TOO. In order to say that conclusively though, I would have to run bios on the names of those being released.

prisons may just be those Palestinian dissidents YASSER failed to jail during the Oslo process. Has a list of NAMES been released yet?
