Sen. Clinton backs security fence
Israel's security fence, built to halt Palestinian terrorism, is outside the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the court should immediately recuse itself from the case, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) said Sunday.

"This fence is a legitimate response by a sovereign nation to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks," Clinton told reporters at a press conference outside United Nations headquarters.

She also lauded Israel for building the fence, which she described as a restrained, defensive measure against terrorism.

"We need to make it absolutely clear that Israel could, at any time, take massive military action against the terrorists and the Palestinians who support them," she said. "This is an act of restraint, this is an act of defense, this is an act that should be seen for what it is."

4. Thank you!
It certainly is a brave stance considering the way the media has been covering this story.

Appreciate your recognizing this!

6. You were being sarcastic? No!
I'm afraid you have the media coverage exactly backwards, but that's okay. No problem.

9. I am shocked and dismayed - Hillary has totally sold out...
to the American Pro-Israel lobby, which she must be completely beholden to. How else could she come up with such a completely one sided statement?

I liked when Israel was run by Labor. Since 9/11 Sharon has gone completely over the top, with his tactics of collective punishment, his increasing violations of the Geneva convention, his continued defiance of UN resolutions and he should be condemned not praised! The specific actions are too numerous to name. But the worst of all is this wall. Which even Bush has condemned, so Hillary thinks it just OK?! I am shocked and dismayed and she has lost me forever, Hillary, you were a liberal? What happened? Where is the balanced view??

The wall is only acceptable and reasonable if it follows international borders. But this wall is a land grab, and makes life unlivable for the already desperate Palestinians. It goes far, far into Palestinian land. It has been universally condemned. It is wrong. It will lead to more hatred. It will cause more violence, not less.

Hillary Clinton has lost my respect by being even more Pro-Israel that Bush. Bush has allowed Sharon to run amok worse than ever. Hillary, I guess we hardly knew ya.

10. Please show me something that has changed
IMO, Hillary's views are the same today as when Bill was president and Barak was the PM and the Labor party was in charge.

she has nothing to "sell out" except for a few misguided fans.

Considering the venue this was spoken before, and consistant tendencies, I do not see reason for the surprise at her remarks.

12. Hillary abandons all hope of peace with embrace of Wall
I just assumed a Clinton would emphasize a multi-lateral approach and negotiations, like Bill did. I assumed that like, any thoughtful leader, would at least consider the opposing view or at least criticize the route, like Bush did. But, no, Hillary thinks ultra right wing solutions are the way to go.

The wall is, after all, a complete abdication of the peace process and a utter disengagement with the Arab peoples of Palestine. The wall recognizes, with unchangeable facts on the ground, that Palestinians will forever and always be locked in a blood feud with the Jews of Israel forever and ever.

Furthermore, the very idea that the wall will actually protect Israel is ludicrous. Fortress Israel is an illusion, because it is simply another collective punishment outrage and will foment more violence. Like the Maginot line and the Berlin wall, it will fall.

Hillary can kiss the Presidency goodbye. America wants a balanced view. No wonder DU has banished this discussion to this ignoble corner. When we find out how you fanatics feel, the rest of us Democrats just feel sick. The fanatics are simply unable to make progress, the wall is the latest example of failure.

Looks like the 'road map' is a road to nowhere.

13. What hope of peace?
Tell me, seriously, what hope does Israel have of making peace with the insane, bigoted murdering terrorists who wish to destroy Israel?

Hillary is a breath of fresh air. It's good to see some in our party haven't abandoned Israel.

15. What politician has "abandoned Israel"?
Please point them out because I'm not seeing any.Hell,Dean was raked over the coals for just daring to suggest an "evenhanded approach".After the treatment he recieved for that I dont think any politician would have the guts to speak out against Israel even if they nuked the politicians family.

I do agree with your first sentence though.

18. Dean tried
And backed off. More than politicians per se, it's the extreme anti-Israel left that is prevalent in places like WSWS, Common Dreams and even at times right here.

21. Besides that it was stupid
Even-handed means we will give the terrorists' side equal time. Israel is our ally and they are the ones we should back. The PA has twice backed our enemy Iraq and Palestinian terrorists have killed Americans.

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

14. Hi Chicago Democrat
:hi:

Dear Hilary is not our favourite down here. Issues that we have with her are (roughly):

In the months after 911 when things were a bit hot in israel/Palestine, she made two solidarity visits to israel.

Signatory to two letters to bush* supporting israel, one letter had only 6 or 7 other signatories.

Went to the wedding of the daughter of the head of one of the top pro-israel organisations in the u.s.

That I can remember offhand

Also the cause of a very major split at the DU before the 2002 elections.
