Islamic Jihad planned to target Israel from the sea

The recent arrest of an Islamic Jihad terrorist revealed attempts by the movement to establish a marine cell that would attack Israeli targets from the sea off the Gaza Strip coast.

The operatives were to pose as fishermen and sail in boats or canoes that had received the necessary fishing licenses allowing them to sail. In order to boost the marine cell's operations the movement secured funds to the tune of half a million dollars that it planned to invest in the activities.

Details of the Islamic Jihad's attempts to improve their capability and seek out new ways of attacking Israeli targets were released by the Prime Minister's Office and Shin Bet on Thursday.
