Toronto Star attacks Canada's position on the wall

<So convoluted is Canada's position on the Israeli security barrier that it is no longer logical. Ottawa condemns the wall, yet objects to the International Court of Justice considering Palestinian objections that echo Ottawa's.>

<On Oct. 21, Canada voted with the majority in the General Assembly in calling on Israel to cease construction and undo the sections of the barrier built beyond the Green Line that marks the 1967 boundary between Israel and the West Bank.>

<Speaking to the motion, Canada again questioned the legality of "this extensive barrier" and said, "a unilateral re-partition of land through the establishment of this barrier will not lead to lasting peace.">

<But Canada abstained, saying, "the conflict needs to be resolved through negotiation." Going to court may not be "a useful step at this time in this highly charged environment.">

1. Good to See the Walll Come down...
on the phoney Canadian 'librul' patina that this country likes to send out to our good Progressive neighbours to the South, especially regarding Israel...

At Least ONE publication in this country is willing to step up to the plate and break the thaw...

God knows it is needed...

Maybe Canada's NDP might step up to the plate sometime soon and question our policy ...

(Anyone ask the leaders of the latest incarnation of the Conservative Party if they're going to move our Embassy to Jerusalem yet?)

2. Does Canada have a powerful version of AIPAC?
Note: The Star is Canada's largest newspaper.

3. Well yeah...
CJC fulfils the bill...

I remember a battle in the 80s when they went to court to close down Co-op radio in Vancouver because of a program called 'Vocies of Palestine'

Apparantely it wasn't enuff to get the program to not play Arab music and news...BUT the whole station had to closed

(So will the Embassy still be moved to Jerusalem?)

4. Interesting
How much influence do special interests have on Canadian politics?

I'm an American so I don't know what the Conservative Party's position on the Embassy is. I don't think any country will ever move their embassy there, even America.

5. Joe Clark...
He pledged it and ,fortunately, that was a stump promise that was never fulfilled in his short-lived gov't...but back in the wake of the philosopher king's reign...such loyalities to the family compact were considered necessary...

And still are necessary...

Belinda, who can't speak French, is doing well in Quebec

6. I doubt Canada would do it
It would cause Canada to be hated throughout the Muslim world and would cost the party who did that the Muslim vote (Muslims are 2% of Canada's population).

Does she have a shot at beating Harper? I have read that she trails him badly in the polls.

Is the I/P issue a major issue in Canadian politics?
