Kucinich on Palestine
Al-Jazeerah, Feb 28 ,2004

As an Arab-American and a lifelong supporter of the rights of the Palestinian people, I have good news for you! In this year's presidential race, there is a candidate who has the wisdom, the courage, and the independence to create a climate in which peace can finally become a reality between the Palestinians and Israel. That candidate is Dennis J. Kucinich, a4 -term congressman from Cleveland, Ohio. Congressman Kucinich not only supports statehood for the Palestinians, thus removing the single greatest source of anti-American sentiment throughout the Arab and Muslim world, but is the only candidate that has a clearly- defined plan for ending the occupation of Iraq and bringing our troops home within 90 days of his election. Dennis Kucinich is also the only candidate that has a plan for creating a just and lasting peace in both Iraq and Palestine. Leaders in national Muslim organizations like CAIR, ISNA, and the American Muslim Alliance have expressed support for Kucinich. Among the reasons cited by Muslims for supporting Kucinich are:

1 . Kucinich's opposition to the Iraq war.

2. Kucinich's support of Palestinian rights.

3. Kucinich's opposition to the civil liberties-shredding Patriot Act.

4. Kucinich's proposals for universal health care and expanded public education are consistent with their religious beliefs about providing for the less fortunate.

4. you're complaining about one-sided?
Nearly every U.S. politician is blatantly one-sided in support of Israel - no matter how murderous Israel's regime gets. Yet, the guy that steps up and says that Palestinian rights should also be recognized gets smeared as "one-sided"

LOL give me a break.

If you have proof of that you should post it or retract your slanderous statement.

Just because Hamas and the ISM have mutual goals doesn't give you the right to slander Dennis Kucinich. I have never heard him to be supportive of Hamas. Quite frankly, I believe he abhors them as much as almost every American citizen. What is very sad though is that it's necessary to include the word "almost" in the previous sentence.

On Israel-Palestine?

Or just the fact he isn't slavishly "pro-Israel" enough? (quotes used deliberately - he is pro-Israel but not pro-militarisation of Israel and anti-Palestinian; the operative definition).

10. My "specific" disagreement with him is simple
In the year 2004 a Kucinich candidacy means four more years of *bush, pure and simple. A rudimentary knowledge of politics in the USA is required to understand that simple fact. Dennis doesn't win one state in a contest with that asshole now sitting in the White House.

He hasn't come close to even 5% support for his own parties nomination and you expect him to win a general election in November? I don't give a shit if he comes out for motherhood or apple pie, 4 more years of a republican leadership is intolerable to contemplate.

You want "specific"? You got "specific"!!!!

You could try clicking the link you're responding to. Maybe then you'll note the absurdity of claiming this is an "al-Jeezera" (sic) "endorsement".

In case you don't note it, obviously an op-ed supporting Edwards in the New York Times is not an endorsement by that paper.

I'm not sure why I have to point this out.

You *don't* have to point it out. This is a message board. People post their opinion here. I posted mine.

Not only is there no requirement for you to point something out, there is not a requirement that anyone even post here at all. It is all strictly voluntary. In my opinion, you misunderstand the purpose of the board.

20. "On Israel-Palestine"
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 01:04 PM by tinnypriv

You seemed to have skipped the fact I added that in order to make the question conditional. It was the first sentence

Anyway, though it is not my place to advise Americans how to vote, I'd certainly tell anyone who asked that if they don't vote against Bush then they're voting for Bush.

On the nomination process, in states that Kerry will win, tactical voting for Kunicich would probably be the best move. Perhaps Edwards if the concern of that particular voter is more moderate vis a vis NAFTA or DLC-control. Perhaps Sharpton in other civil issues.

At the start of the race, and assuming it was a closer contest, that tactical voting might not have worked. It may have taken away progressive votes from the non-DLC, given them to Lieberman, Clark etc. It's a complex matter, and down to the individual voter to decide. Certainly not me.

In any case, I'll ignore the barely concealed insult and state that if Kucinich could win, he should be supported.

Since he can't, Kerry or Edwards should be supported.

That doesn't mean that you can't vote for Kerry (or Edwards) whilst also working to attain a political environment within which a candiate like Kucinich could win, in the future (assuming you agree with his platform and concerns that is, or something close to them).

If anybody wants my opinion, I happen to agree with something close to that platform, and I suspect most of DU does as well. Tactics to achieve it are a different matter - i.e. the immediate and pressing need to get rid of the ultra-nationalist fanatics around Bush in 2004.

Repeat: Kucinich's platform cannot be attained in Nov 2004, nor can he win the nomination. Even assuming the latter wasn't true, the former would still hold. That doesn't mean his platform is not roughly correct, and it seems the voters are a sophisticated bunch and understand the distinction. One reason I say that is because the polls show support for the Kucinich principles (when unnamed) and support for Kerry in duality.

Obviously voters like the platform, but consider "electablity" (a code-word for getting rid of Bush) a higher immediate priority.

That is my reading of the situation. Feel free to disagree, though you could at least disagree on some solid basis, since I doubt you could squeeze a sliver of paper between my position and yours on this matter, at least given your comment above.

Quite telling that Al-Jazeerah is endorsing Kucinich. As others have stated, his lack of success is telling. I celebrate his failure.

His leftist views on foreign affairs doom him. Dean's waffling on Israel helped lead to his downfall. Kerry is wise enough to stay in line. It would be quite difficult for a candidate that treats a terrorist government as equal to a democratic government to be elected.
