Keep the gloves on in Gaza
Having led hundreds of counterterrorist missions in my time, I am no stranger to body counts and bloody vows of revenge by the likes of Hamas. These are unavoidable in war.

What bothers me is something that has become a bizarre and needless fixture of Israeli military operations in Gaza: dead Palestinian kids, buried by equally young compatriots for whom such "martyrdom" is a sort of extracurricular sport.

Watch the television footage of this week's raids in the Nusseirat and Bureij refugee camps, and there they are – hundreds of children, wearing school backpacks and wielding slingshots, clustered around masked gunmen as they ambush Israeli troops.

That some of these young spectators got killed and wounded is no surprise. That Israel allowed itself to become mired in such an ugly situation, is – especially given Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's pledge to quit most of the Gaza Strip by year's end.

This article is an excellant read. There will be some who because its origin is the Jerusalem Post will kneejerk their reactions. To those I say shame on you and you just expose your utter hatred for the State of Israel.

1. Nothing kneejerk about my reaction...
Knee-jerking would be rehashing all the posts I've seen slagging off Al-Jazeera (even in one case when it wasn't even Al-Jazeera that was the source). My dislike of JPost comes from nothing more than an aversion to conservative sources, and especially conservative sources that have screwed up in the past when it comes to reporting news stories. And my aversion to conservative sources is why I hang out at a progressive site like DU. Feel free to explain how that morphs into an 'utter hatred for the State of Israel'. I hold the same contempt for JPost that I do for Murdoch-owned publications here, so does that mean I'm exposing my 'utter hatred for the State of Australia'? ;)

Violet...

says it perfectly - I'd love to know how disliking a conservative media source (to be honest as an ex-journo I have deep misgivings about ALL corporate media, they'll never print a story that butts up against their corporate interest, but that's another thread altogether) demostrates "utter hatred" but then again I've been called anti-semitic by various imbeciles too (though not here I hasten to add - not yet anyway) which all things considered is f*&king hilarious

20. Then as an ex-journo
why not explain the difference to those folks who have trouble differentiating between a "news story" and an "editorial"

2. Really. I'm not a big fan of Jerusalem Post.
Do I "expose (my) utter hatred for the State of Israel" by saying that? And if so, please explain...

5. Try reading my comment again
Edited on Sun Mar-14-04 09:13 AM by GabysPoppy
You will see that it applies to a person who would comment on the article solely because it originates from the Post. Whether you like or dislike the Jerusalem Post is not indicative of hatred for the State of Israel, not is that implied by anything I said.

I would be interested in your comments about the article which I don't know even if you read or not. You might even be in agreement with it or not. Either position would also not be an indication of whether you held hidden hatreds for the SOI.

on edit: Follow the bouncing ball and watch for the knee jerkers to comment.

did DU become a place to defend right-wing material, while smearing those who rightly criticize references to those right-wing sources?

6. Posters on DU routinely link to Rense, John Kaminski, The Barnes Review,
What Really Happened, Joe Vialls, and other vicious right-wing antisemitic filth.

I await your condemnation of such conduct when it ouccurs on DU.

7. So that makes it ok for someone to post one more right-wing source?
All the ones you mentioned are crap, and when someone uses them as a source they rightfully get blasted.WhatReallyHappened is even mentioned in the DU rules as a no-no.

I await your condemnation in THIS thread.

14. Posters on DU link to FreeRebublic and post comments
from there, I personnely don't have a problem with anybody
linking to anything, if somebody gets to link to Jpost
I should be allowed to link to What Really Happened, it doesn't
mean I agree with everthing on What Really Happened or
that I think people who link to Jpost agree with all of whats
on that site.

18. If I ever see anything that I think is anti-semitic
which by the way includes posts that are anti-Palestinian too - I will condemn them or if they're especially vile I'll alert.

Personally I think Mel Gibson's sado-masochistic ego-project is re-hashing old hatreds based on old misreadings of the Bible and I've argued that with some real freaks on DU.

However I doubt very much we'd have the same opinion as to what classifies as anti-semitic

with the article, I went to the link, it asks for registration and
a password, don't know if I want to get a password to the Jpost
since other posters say its rightwing, I'll go to rightwing sites
if I don't need a password.

16. Add another two hours
Here is something to contemplate as to why there is the unfortunate deaths of many of the Palestinian children.

"Watch the television footage of this week's raids in the Nusseirat and Bureij refugee camps, and there they are – hundreds of children, wearing school backpacks and wielding slingshots, clustered around masked gunmen as they ambush Israeli troops."

Can anyone spell "COLLATERAL" - Unfortunate yes, sad yes, in fact it's hard to contemplate anything worse than a child's death, but it is a FACT on the ground. They shouldn't be there. They shouldn't be encouraged by either their parents or the propaganda of these terrorists to be there. DEATH and MARTYDOM cannot be encouraged.

19. Why are there any Israelis in Gaza in the first place?
Why do you have rightwing settlers stealing Palestinian land in Gaza?

The land of present-day Gaza was never part of Israel, past or present.

21. The IDF explain why they were in Gaza...
This is from Haaretz. Link is on original thread.

"In the last of these operations, the one that resulted in the killing of 15 Palestinians last week, Shamni even articulated a new IDF doctrine: "stimulus and response." The purpose of the operation, it was reported, was "to stimulate the armed individuals to come out and then kill them off." This method, which led to the killing of innocent people, including children, drew no critical reaction. No one asked why every armed Palestinian is marked for death and why it's necessary to "stimulate" armed people in Gaza altogether."

23. To those I say shame on you and you just expose your utter hatred for the
State of Israel.

Nobody hates the state of Israel. They hate the right wing Likud hawk hardliner terrorists like Sharon who are running Israel into the sand.

Do you hate the US because Jorge Dubya Emm Dee Arbusto is the president? Hate the leader, not the country.

Rabin tried to make peace and was assasinated by a right winger Israeli. It seems Israel no longer wants to make peace, otherwise that election stealing, corrupt, wall building prick Sharon wouldn't be in charge.

I guess this post will be deleted, even though I only personally attacked Ariel Sharon.

Gee, you can attack Bush and Blair here, but not a right winger terrorist like Sharon?
